Why do we cite sources?

When we cite we:

show respect for the work of others
give the reader the chance to check the truth of our work and find out more if they are interested
show we have developed good research skills and get credit for it
Show that we know what we are talking about and that we draw our own conclusions
share the blame (if we get it wrong).
