Students and Parents - Using Google Classroom

Sign Into Your Chromebook

If you're at home and have never signed in to the school Chromebook you are using, here is how to do it:

  1. First sign into your home wifi. Look in the lower right hand corner of your Chromebook for the wifi symbol, click it, and look for the name of your home network that pops up. Click on your home network and if there's a password, enter your home wifi password. For more help connecting to your home wifi, click here.

  2. If you have signed into that Chromebook before, you will see your name/account on the screen and when you click on it you'll be able to enter your school password.

  3. If you have never signed into that Chromebook before, look in the lower left hand corner and click on the words, "Add person".

  4. On the small box that pops up in the middle of the screen, you'll need to enter your school Google email address. The last part of the email address may be already entered (if your school division manages the Chromebook) and you'll just need to put the first part of the email address before the @ symbol. If the email address part is completely empty, type your whole email address and click "Next".

  5. Enter your school Google password and click "Next'. That's it!

See the example video to the right for an example from a school division.

If you are using a Windows or Mac computer or laptop at home instead of a Chromebook, check out this video to see how to:

  1. Sign into Google with your child's school email and password by visiting https://google.ca and using the blue "Sign in" button in the upper right corner.

  2. Visit Google Classroom at https://classroom.google.com .

  3. On the Google Classroom website look for the "+" symbol in the upper right corner, and enter in the 6 or 7 digit code they have shared with you.

  4. Alternatively, your teacher may have emailed you a link that you just need to click on instead of entering in a code.

  5. You can use a tablet or smartphone to sign into Google Classroom either with your web browser or with the iOS or Android Google Classroom app.

Open, Work on, and Submit an Assignment

The teacher can create student work assignments through Google Classroom that can include links to websites, files to look at, files to work on and send back, and more.

To access these assignments:

  • Select the 'Classwork' tab at the top middle portion of the Google Classroom screen.

  • Locate the title of the assignment and click on it to expand.

  • Select 'View assignment' to open the assignment fully.

  • See the assignment title and instructions in the middle of the screen.

  • In the upper right corner of the screen, notice the 'Your work' area with a list of files, links, and videos. Click on any of the resources to open them.

  • The "+ Add or create" button in the upper right corner allows students to add their own files or links to submit with the assignment.

  • The "Turn in" button allows students to submit the assignment as being completed.

  • The "Private comments" area allows teacher and the student to communicate privately about the assignment. The student can ask questions directly or respond to feedback the teacher has given.

While it's ideal for students to do their Google Classroom schoolwork on a computer or Chromebook, it may be useful for parents to use a smartphone with the Google Classroom app to keep tabs on the student's work. Parents signing into the Google Classroom app with their child's email and password can see new schoolwork notifications, marks, feedback, and work progress. See the video to the left for more!
