Anna Kitagawa

My name is Anna Kitagawa, and I am a sophomore at Concord Carlisle Regional High School. I grew up in Portage, Michigan, and I moved to Massachusetts in October of 2018. My father is Japanese, but my mother is American. My school district in Michigan was mostly white, but my friend group through school was almost entirely Asian. For years they simply saw me as white, but everyone else saw me as Japanese. It was as if each side was trying to push me to be part of the other. After this bizarre back and forth throughout my childhood, I wanted to share my story for everyone else who’s been in my situation.
