Financial Aid

The 5 Types of Financial Aid

Grants & Scholarships: financial aid that doesn’t have to be repaid (unless, for example, you withdraw from school and owe a refund).

Work-study: allows you to earn money for your education.

Loans: allow you to borrow money for school. You must repay your loans, with interest.

Merit-based aid: money given because of skill, such as academic, artistic, athletic, etc.

Need-based aid: money given because the student has need.

General Eligibility for Federal Aid

  • You must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a regular student working toward a degree or certificate in an eligible program.

  • You must be a U. S. citizen or eligible noncitizen.

  • You must comply with Selective Service registration, if required.

  • You might not be able to receive federal student aid if you’ve been convicted under federal or state law of selling or possessing illegal drugs.

Who Completes the Forms?

The federal government believes that it is the parents’ and student’s responsibility to pay for college.

Therefore:

  • Parents’ and student information is required

  • For divorce or separation situations, the parent with whom the student resides completes the forms

  • For joint custody situations, the parent who provides the most support completes the form
