English 11:
Instructor: Mrs. R. Fuentes
This literature and reading course is designed and taught with a particular emphasis on the close reading and analysis of work that is diverse in both scope and genre. We will examine poetry, short stories, novels, plays, and non-fiction from many different periods and cultures. Students will be expected to read and write often.
Some Basic Norms and Expectations
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: Students will be writing often and in different formats. The expectation is that work you create is your own. Please do not rely on AI services to do your work. The only way I know what you have learned is through what you show me. Please always show ACADEMIC INTEGRITY.
Intellectual honesty is fundamental to all learning. Any breach of this trust has serious consequences. Plagiarism will result in no credit on the assignment and an office referral. The Columbus Public Schools recognizes plagiarism as a level-two discipline infraction that may result in student suspension. This includes ALL work for ALL classes!
ATTENTENDANCE: If you are absent, it is your responsibility to make up any missed assignments. This MUST be done in a timely manner. Work may ONLY be made up if a student submits a valid excused absence. You have the equal number of days to make-up assignments as your excused absence, from the day you return.
Make a habit of checking crates located in the back of the room. Check the WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS crates for any handouts you may have missed. Secondly, meet with me after class has ended to inquire if there was anything else you may have missed. Please, do not disrupt the educational process by asking for missed work during class.
Absence from this class not only serves to hamper your personal development but, perhaps more significantly, jeopardize the development of those with whom you are intellectually growing. If you cut class, you will be written up. You also will receive a zero on any work that was completed or due that day. Sitting in another teacher’s class or an admin’s office (unauthorized) is NOT a valid excuse! Please make attendance a priority.
Being suspended is NOT an excused absence. It's a suspension. You are allowed to complete work during your suspension. All work is due on the date that you are scheduled to return to school.
No late work will be accepted for credit. Please be responsible with your time management. Due dates are given enough in advance that all students should be able to complete the work. Please contact me directly in the event of an emergency.
Assignments:
Students should expect a variety of reading, writing, and viewing assignments.
Students will be expected to use their CCS login to access all academic resources (CANVAS: Clever, GC, Study Sync, etc.)
Summative Assessments (Test and Quizzes): Be prepared! Tests and quizzes over units and novels will be both in subjective and objective forms. You will only be assessed over information that has been covered, so it is very important to pay close attention and be prepared.
Formative Assessments (Homework and In-Class Work): Although most work is done in class these assignments make up MOST of your final point grades. Doing all this work can make the difference when you need it most. Don’t get behind.
Grading:
All assignments are scored as points. Keep track of all assignments--the points possible and the points earned-- and always double check those scores once they have been submitted to Infinite Campus. If you have questions about your grades or want to discuss an assignment, please see me during lunch or a conference period. Please get in the habit of checking Infinite Campus grading system, which is provided by the district. Parents will also have access to this tool. Grades will be updated on a bi-weekly basis.
Grades are calculated at the end of every quarter. There are four quarters. At the end of each semester, an average of the two quarters is calculated and that is what goes on your transcript. You must pass both semesters to receive the full credit for this required course.
Below is the Columbus City Schools’ grading scale that will be used:
A+, 98-100 A, 97-92 A-, 91-90 B+, 89-88 B, 87-82 B-, 81-80 C+, 79-78 C, 77-72 C-, 71-70 D+, 69-68 D,67-62 D-, 69-60 F, 59-below
Because your grade is averaged on a point scale, any zero is extremely damaging to your grade. All assignments must be completed.
Participation and Extra Credit: Most of your grade in this course will be determined by your efforts in work that is completed in class and for homework. Participation is ALWAYS considered when grading occurs. Stay engaged!
DO NOT rely on extra credit to “save” your grade. It is not given often, and you are expected to do your regular work!
Supplies:
1. Bring your CHARGED Chrome Book to class EVERY DAY.
2. Highlighters (at least 4 colors)
