During the Fall 2022 semester, I will be interning on the Unified Workflow (UW) Team at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA's mission has a focus on observing and Interpreting changes In the ocean and atmosphere, to prepare for high-events such as high-impact weather, climate change and to predict future oceanic and atmospheric patterns. NOAA serves the community by distributing their collected data and Information publicly and privately to be used for scientific analysis. NOAA's ultimate goal as an organization Is to protect the people and environment.
With an understanding of who NOAA is as an organization, I was able to begin my onboarding process. Christina was a great help this week by gathering the tools we needed to set-up before week one. She also provided useful resources for Insight as to what team we were on, where our team fit In with the organization as a whole, and what our vision Is.
Tool Guide
The tools we will be utilizing for team communications are GitHub, Jira, Confluence, and Slack. GitHub Is used to share, collaborate and edit code within a team efficiently. We were given access to the Unified Forecast System (UFS) team under the UW developers position(uw-devs), which gives permission to edit the ufs-community repository. Jira supports a project management style of team communications, allowing them to plan, track, and manage tasks within a project. Confluence assists In sharing key Information within a team serving as a documentation tool that also allows use of Team Calendars. Lastly, Slack provides a messaging app that connects team members together. The set-up for these various tools was relatively easy, although I had already worked with GitHub and Slack In the past, making navigating the tools simpler.
Where do we fit In?
As part of the Unified Workflow Team, we belong to the NOAA Earth Prediction Innovation Center (EPIC) Program. The EPIC team's objective Is to Improve weather forecasting systems. Christina also provided some perspective on each team members affiliations within the company.
Overall, It was a successful Week 0 In grasping the ropes of the organization, tools and team. Looking ahead to next week, we'll be concentrating on the agile scrum methodology that is an essential framework for the team to accomplish tasks and met their goals.
