Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT IS COLLEGE TRACK?
College Track is a college completion after school program designed to help students, who are driven & motivated but lack resources, obtain a college education. We ensure that students are successful in high school, matriculate to college, & graduate from college.
HOW DOES COLLEGE TRACK HELP STUDENTS GET INTO COLLEGE?
We provide the tools & opportunities needed to excel. College Track’s comprehensive approach supports students with three core program areas: 1. Academic Affairs, which ensures that students are both eligible & competitive for college admissions; 2. Student Life, designed to connect students with volunteer & internship opportunities that mold well-rounded, active student leaders; 3. College Access, aimed at exposing students to colleges & universities, providing support & guidance around applications, scholarships & financial aid; 4. College Completion, aimed at supporting students with 1:1 support in completing a 4-year degree, with support for applying for and managing scholarships & financial aid, & adjusting to college life
HOW MUCH DOES COLLEGE TRACK COST TO JOIN?
Nothing! Our program is completely FREE! College Track is a nonprofit funded by individual and corporate donations.
WHO MAY APPLY TO COLLEGE TRACK?
All College Track applicants must plan to attend High School in San Francisco. Students typically apply near the summer of their 8th-grade year and the first semester of their 9th grade. We are accepting current 9th & 10th-grade students. The majority of our students are eligible for free/reduced lunch and will be the first in their families to earn a college degree.
WHAT IS A TYPICAL AFTERNOON LIKE AT COLLEGE TRACK?
Students come to College Track 3-5 hours per week, depending on the individual schedule they create with us. Our center typically offers 2 sessions between the hours of 4:30 PM-7:00 PM Monday through Tuesday and 3 sessions between the hours of 3:30 PM-7:00 PM Wednesday through Thursday. Students will participate in tutoring to strengthen their academic performance and also have access to textbooks and computers. Additionally, students may take enrichment courses such as arts, coding, or financial literacy. As students get older, they will receive test prep and college advising to identify which colleges would be best for them.
CAN I PLAY SPORTS WHILE IN COLLEGE TRACK?
Yes! If you are involved in a sport, creating a College Track schedule that works best for you can be tricky, but we have many students who find time to do both. We will do our best to accommodate, and students should let their coaches know that they may need to miss the occasional practice to maintain their College Track commitment.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON’T GET GOOD GRADES?
College Track staff empower students to take ownership of their own academic success & areas of growth. Students who show commitment to improve will continue to be supported & encouraged to attend additional sessions at College Track.
WHAT IS THE BANK BOOK SCHOLARSHIP?
College Track expects that each semester students will attend at least 90% of their scheduled sessions, maintain at least a 3.0 GPA, and earn 12.5 community service hours. Under the Bank Book program, students are rewarded for meeting these goals and can earn scholarship funds of up to $700 per semester ($5,600 by the time they graduate).
