Open access (OA) refers to freely available, digital, online information. Open access scholarly literature is free of charge and often carries less restrictive copyright and licensing barriers than traditionally published works, for both the users and the authors.
Cornell UniversityOpen research comprises openness throughout the research cycle, through collaborative working and sharing and making research methodology, software, code and equipment freely available online, along with instructions for using it. Open research includes making publications freely available online (open access), in addition to the underlying research data (open data).
University of ExeterOpen Science is a collection of actions designed to make scientific processes more transparent and results more accessible. Its goal is to build a more replicable and robust science; it does so using new technologies, altering incentives, and changing attitudes.
Open Science FoundationUVA’s Environmental Resilience Institute links research to action to find solutions for climate and environmental resilience challenges. ERI fosters collaboration, providing support for new projects as well as amplifying and connecting work conducted across Grounds. ERI creates opportunities for the next generation of leaders to engage with some of the toughest environmental futures challenges through interdisciplinary research and practical experiences. ERI builds external partnerships to connect research and discovery with real world solutions.
Since media studies began in the 1970s, its object of study has changed in fundamental ways. Media were, at first, thought almost wholly within the frame of the nation-state, its national politics and culture. Since then, the diffusion of continuing technological innovations, driven by the world economy, has changed the media landscape beyond recognition, producing the digital and globalized world that we inhabit today.
Situated within this larger frame, the Global Media Cultures Collaboratory will bring together scholars with a shared interest in the rise of digital and mobile media technologies, the ongoing transformation of established media industries, and emergent forms of media practice and use that are reconfiguring socio-cultural, political, and economic terrains across the Global South.
Opened in January 2018, the Link Lab at UVA Engineering is a world-class center of excellence in cyber-physical systems. The Lab consists of more than 250 faculty and graduate students from multiple departments and conducts pioneering work in Robotics & Autonomous Vehicles, Smart and Connected Health, Hardware for IoT, and Smart Cities. Prioritizing impact on real-world problems, Link Lab partners with industry to tackle the most critical questions at the intersection of the cyber and physical worlds.

The School of Data Science at the University of Virginia has endorsed a set of open access guidelines that help to guide faculty in satisfying the promotion and tenure requirements of open scholarship. Those guidelines are publicly available, and have been endorsed (in a very slightly modified form, as non-binding, aspirational good practice) by the UVA faculty senate, as well.

The Research Collaboration Corner is an inspiring and catalytic meeting place in the historic Corner Building at the entrance to the University, designed to enhance collaborations among small and large groups from the university community at all levels with a vision to promote excellence in research, scholarship, and entrepreneurship.
Examples include:
Students collaborations
Research meetings among Pan-University Institute participants to discuss new ideas and review progress
Meetings of participants in the various 3 Cavaliers projects to exchange ideas and mentor students
Research development activities that involve convening researchers across Grounds to learn about new opportunities
Meetings that help promote the integration of research with education and community engagement
UVACollab partners with faculty, staff, and students in the work that sustains the Academical Village—engaging in interactive discussions, joining virtual meetings, securely storing and sharing materials, and much more.
The School of Data Science at the University of Virginia has adopted a recommended workflow for open scholarship that helps faculty understand how to make their work open at each step in a typical research project lifecycle. The workflow lives on an internal site as it’s being developed and tested, and will be made available widely.

ACS Transformative Agreements help your institution sustainably support the transition to open science by growing the amount of work your researchers publish in open access formats, while also providing full access to ACS subscription content. Authors at hundreds of institutions worldwide benefit from ACS Transformative Agreements each year.
The Higher Education Leadership Initiative for Open Scholarship (HELIOS) is a cohort of colleges and universities committed to collective action to advance open scholarship within and across their campuses. Leaders from US colleges and universities have joined this community of practice, working together to promote a more transparent, inclusive, and trustworthy research ecosystem.
