Greetings from The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi!
Attached you will find a one page Counselor Guide with a few things to keep in mind about The University of Southern Mississippi as you are talking to students about their Fall 2019 options. I’ve compiled a few talking points and updates to keep in mind for this year.
Southern Miss continues to be one of the most affordable research intensive, doctoral degree granting institutions in the US.
60% lower tuition than the national average tuition at public, 4-year institutions in the US.
Annual cost of attendance is lower than the average annual cost at the top 10 community colleges receiving international students in the US.
We continue to offer a $2,000 freshman scholarship to students admitted by December 1 with 3.0 core GPA and 1080 SAT.
NEW THIS YEAR: International applicants can also receive an additional $2,000/year if they apply and are admitted to Honors College. They must be admitted to the University by December 1 and must apply to Honors by January 15th with 3.5 core GPA and 1180 SAT.
For those of you not familiar with USM, I’m including a few extra points below to give you an idea of what type of student might be a good fit. For those already familiar, here are the noteworthy updates for Fall 2019:
Non-Resident tuition remains low at $10,770/year (estimated 2019-2020 tuition)
2019-20 Total estimated cost of attendance is $23,099 (including tuition/fees, housing, meals, books, personal spending, and health insurance)
New Major: Biomedical Science
Music and athletics offer additional scholarships. Women’s Soccer, Tennis, Golf and Men’s Tennis, Golf, Track, in particular, recruit internationally. I am happy to help get applicants get in touch with the appropriate people in Music and Athletics.
Who is a good fit for USM:
Students who are looking for an affordable, mid-sized, Division I, residential campus in a small and safe city
High ability students looking for a small, challenging Honors College at an affordable cost
Polymer Science and Engineering is one of our top majors with nearly 100% job placement prior to graduation and undergrad research opportunities (for those not familiar, this is materials Engineering, based in the Chemical Engineering field but overlaps into many other engineering fields, including Biomedicine. These two Youtube videos will give you a better sense of the broad range. Polymer 1 Polymer 2)
Students who are open to experiencing new cultures (we are still considered part of the southern coastal region and our culture aligns a little more with New Orleans than that of the Deep South. We are only two hours from New Orleans by car.)
Students who don’t mind warm and humid weather (though our fall, winter, and spring months are very pleasant and allow for many outdoor activities)
