The Pow Wow began in 1959 as Scappoose’s way to celebrate the Oregon Centennial. The town was decorated in a Wild West motif, to greet a covered wagon that was touring the state. A mock gunfight was staged in the streets, and everyone had so much fun that the informally organized Scappoose Booster Club continued the mid-June festival the following year, christening it the Pow Wow.

Each year the Pow Wow had a theme. Some past themes included, but were not limited to: “1776” (1976), “Along the Oregon Trail” (1977), “Reunion Days” (1985), and “Indian Pride” (1984). As the years progressed several community activities were added such as; junior/senior parade, high school dance, scholarship, horse show, fun run, chicken dinner, carnival, kids museum, talent show, concerts, and beer gardens. In 2014 the festival was renamed the Scappoose Summerfest.
