In the 1950s there were two large turkey farms in the area, one operated by Loren Johnson and the other by Fred Havlik. By 1960 they produced 12,000 and 10,000 fowl respectively.
In March 1956, the U.S. public health service advised the state board that Psittacosis, a pneumonia type disease, had broken out in turkey flocks at Scappoose and on Sauvie Island.
