As unbelievable as it may seem today, the story of Footloose is based on a real 1800's law banning dance in a small town in Oklahoma and the effort of a high school students to have the law overturned in 1979.

First, a 1984 film of the same name which propelled actor Kevin Bacon to fame, Footloose was adapted for the Broadway stage in 1996, ran for over two years and received four Tony nominations. It continues to be one of the most successful musical scores with several songs that reached the Billboard charts including the title song which hit number 1 on Billboard's Top 100 Chart. It is in the all time top 20 list of musicals done by high schools in the United States.
The plot line centres around a small midwest American town that have outlawed dance in an attempt to protect its youth from the dangers of excess. However, scratch beneath the surface and there's much more going on. It is, in essence, a show about loss, the different ways people try to deal with it and, how trying to avoid its pain can result in a wide swath of trouble. This, combined with a healthy dose of fun, upbeat music and explosive dance numbers makes for a show that's will offer those both onstage and off a very memorable experience.
Simply put, Footloose is a fabulously entertaining show with a lot of heart.

Lots of different options were discussed before settling on this title. Why Footloose?
- It's a blast to do because of the variety of dance and vocal styles needed. Seven different composers and lyricists contributed to the score including Grammy winning artist Kenny Loggins.
- Although the show is popular because of the infective music and entertaining dance numbers, it offers an opportunity to explore some characters who are going through rough times. When portrayed honestly and with sensitivity, the show becomes not only entertaining but powerful and poignant.
- This is a show about a collection of teens who can't dance because they haven't been given the opportunity. As such, the choreography, in the beginning, must reflect that fact. So, cast members do not all have to have great dance technique; This is a show everyone can have fun in!
- Much more of an ensemble show than a "star vehicle", there is a wide range of roles available requiring with a wide range of skills. Especially juicy are the adult roles which. if played honestly and with depth, will elevate the whole production to a higher level.

You will work hard, have a lot of fun, face challenges and overcome them.
- Like any other co-curricular program, the theater experience should integrate with the rest of your educational experience at C.H.S. We will look for opportunities to make the Footloose experience relevant to you. Doing so will make the show a more fulfilling experience.
- Theater is a collaborative endeavour. Whether you are on or off stage doesn't matter. Let me repeat that.... whether you are on or off stage doesn't matter. You have a responsibility in creating a great experience for yourself, your showmates and the audience.
- I consider a successful production one where every member of the team takes a step forward in a way important to them. That includes members of the production team as well. My experience in working with world-class artists have taught me that much of the reason for their success is a never ending thirst for growth and the recognition that failure is a necessary precursor to success.
- Performing arts are a team sport requiring as much if not more dedication, training, technique and skill. Its positive developmental benefits are of equal value to students.
