Hello Beta Families,
My name is Leslie Cicilline, and I am over the moon to be your child's 6th grade science teacher this year! This year in science we will be implementing the NGSS: Next Generation Science Standards. Everything we do together in our scientific learning community will be inquiry based using the NGSS science and engineering practices. These practices allow students to question, notice, and wonder about the science in the world around them. Students will create models, plan and carry out investigations, analyze and interpret data, and use mathematical thinking. They will be able to share ideas using evidence, evaluate competing ideas, give and receive critique, and reach consensus. As scientists, they will construct explanations, and as engineers, they will design solutions. We use an online program called Stemscopes. Students will have access to this through their chromebooks using a username and password.
Please check Powerschool with your child often to see what their current grades are, and if they are missing any assignments.
Grading: Category Weighting for science:
Homework: 10%
Quizzes: 20%
Summative assessments(i.e. Projects, tests): 40%
Classwork/Labs: 30%
If homework is handed in late, students will receive a score of 75%. Homework will not be accepted more than one day late. If students are absent, it is their responsibility to see me about missing work. Per school policy, students have the same number of days they were absent to make up any missing work. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if there is a reason why your child may need more time for homework or make up work.
All of the BETA teachers are here to help with the transition into our amazing school in any way we can. I am confident that your child is ready to become a part of the BETA Team and WJJMS community!
Please feel free to reach out to me any time with any questions or concerns at lcici503@colcheterct.org. Also, check out our Beta Team Website. It is updated daily with classwork, homework and/or other important information.
I am excited to embark on this engaging endeavor with your child. I’m looking forward to a FANTASTIC year!
Sincerely Scientific,
