Dear Beta Team Families,

My name is Peggy Griffing, and I am very excited to start the school year teaching your child. We will spend this next year working on our skills in English: reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, and vocabulary acquisition. 

We will start the year by launching our reading community, discussing favorite books and purposes of reading. We will follow that by writing personal narratives.  We will write everyday practicing our skills as storytellers, but also work on specific skills such as writing conclusions effectively. We will continue the year reading, paying particular attention to characterization, following with a writing unit on character development. Then we will read our nonfiction texts, followed by a writing unit focusing on theme in literature. Finally we will wrap up the year with a unit on social issues. 

As you can see we will be reading and writing a great deal, but we will focus on other skills as well. There will be plenty of opportunities for making choices, such as which book your child would like to read. I am looking forward to seeing your child learn, grow, and change throughout the year.
