Tennis season is moving into postseason
by Kennedy McCarty
The Lady Eagles' tennis season is starting to wind down, but it seems as though they are just getting started. A successful JV season has officially ended and now the varsity is on to the postseason.
Hayden Bellamy repeated as the singles Great Western Activities Conference champion in Scott City. Sam Diedrich and Lexie Schroeder were also GWAC champions in doubles play.
That tournament sent the Lady Eagles off to regionals in McPherson where they took second as a team. Bellamy took first place in singles, and this time, the team of Schroeder and Diedrich placed 3rd in doubles. Those results will send all of them through to State.
State will be taking place on October 14 and October 15 at the Topeka-Kossover Tennis Center on SW Gage Boulevard in Topeka.

Our Lady Eagles had another successful couple weeks. It started when they headed back to Goodland for their GWAC League meet. Anna Starbuck finished the day in 1st place, Brinley Sims took 2nd, and Logan Nolan 5th. With these Individual results, the team finished in first place for the meet thus making them GWAC Champions. This is the third consecutive year that the Lady Eagles have won the league tournament. Additionally, junior Anna Starbuck finished 1st in the GWAC for the 3rd consecutive year.
“It feels pretty good. I’m excited that we’ve done so well these past years and this year,” she said.
Following their success at GWAC they followed it up with more success at regionals in Larned. The team came home with the 3-2-1A Regional Champions plaque. That 1st place was supported by another championship by Anna Starbuck, her third in a row, a 6th place finish for Brinley Sims, and a 9th place finish for Maryn King. With these results, they have qualified for the State Tournament in Hutchinson at the Hutchinson-Carey Park golf course.

The Colby High School varsity football team fell to two conference opponents recently. The #8 ranked Holcomb Longhorns came to town on September 30th and defeated the Eagles 39-12. Colby spotted Holcomb 19 points in the first quarter and then gave up 14 in the second. However, the Eagles did score six in the second quarter to get onto the scoreboard. The game was played evenly in the second half with both teams scoring six points a piece.
The offense was led by Hunter Vaughn who was 13 for 20 passing for 79 yards on the evening and he had a 60 yard touchdown run. Zane Betz led the team in rushing with 47 yards and Brayden Imhof led the team in receiving with six receptions which was good for 36 yards.
The junior varsity team went down to Holcomb the following Monday and had a similar result. The Longhorns defeated the JV Eagles 22-6. The windy conditions played a factor in the game plan, keeping the Eagles from passing as much as they would have liked.
The next action for the Eagle football team came in the form of a rivalry game at Goodland on October 7th. Unfortunately, they fell to the Cowboys 34-8, dropping them to 1-5 on the season.
The JV football game against Goodland was a different story. The Eagles defeated Goodland in a very close game by a score of 22-16. After giving up a touchdown and absorbing a safety in the first half, the Eagles trailed 16-14 at halftime. After taking the lead, Simon Salcido came up with a clutch interception allowing the Eagles to run the clock out and win.
