The following athletes and coaches are our 2026 inductees to the Colby High School Sports Hall of Fame. Nominations to the Hall of Fame are made by the public and the inductees were voted on by the members of the Colby All Sports Booster Club.

Colby High School Class of 1969
During her time at CHS, there were no female sports teams, so she had to compete outside of the school district.
In 1967 & 68, she completed in AAU Jr. Olympic Track & Field. In 1967 she placed 6th in the nation in the 440 yard dash and 5th in the nation as part of a 4x1 relay. The next year at Nationals in Knoxville TN she placed 6th in the nation in the 880 yard dash and 7th place as part of the 4x1 relay again. She also set the state and regional record in the 880 yard dash that year as well.
She also competed with the Topeka Cosmo AAU club from 1967-1970 and attended Regional and Nations meets, competing in the 440, 880 and relays in the Women’s Division.
After graduating from Colby High School, Deanna attended Kansas State University, where she competed in Basketball, Field Hockey and Track and Field. In 3 of the 4 years competing in basketball, K State was regional champions and qualified for the national tournament, where they placed in the top 10 in each tournament, with their best finish of 5th place her senior year.
In 1973, Deanna was featured in the 1973 edition of “Outstanding College Athletes of America” After college, Deanna competed on the USA Handball team from 1973 – 1975, and attended the Olympic Trials in 1973 and 1974

Colby High School Class of 1954
Jim was the 3rd athlete from CHS to be a 12-letter athlete, competing in Football, basketball, and track.
During his time in school Jim was a member of 7 league champions. In football, they were league champs 3 times.
During his 4 years in Football at CHS, Colby only lost 1 league game, 1 non-league game and had 2 ties. His senior season, Jim led the team in Scoring, rushing and passing.
Jim said the most thrilling game he ever played was the 1953 St. Francis game. They were the underdogs, playing in rain and sleet. They trailed 7-6 with 2 minutes to play when he threw a game-winning touchdown pass to Leon Roulier to win the game 13-7 and secured the league championship.
In Basketball, they were league champs in both his junior and senior years, which was the first basketball league championship in 13 yeas for Colby.
In Track, Jim ran hurdles, long jump, pole vault and relays. They were league champs in 1951, which was the first track league championship for Colby ever. They also were league champs during his Junior season, 1952.

Colby High School Class of 1976
Mike participated in Football, Wrestling and Track during his time at Colby High School.
During his time on the football team, Mike earned All league honors for both offensive and defensive line during his Junior and Senior seasons. He received all state honorable mention as a Junior and was First team all state on both offense and defense his senior year. He also received post season all state honors after his senior season from The Topeka Daily Capital, Wichita Eagle and the Kansas City Star. Mike was also selected to play in the Kansas Shrine Bowl.
On the wrestling team, Mike wrestled varsity all 4 years. His junior year he was league champ and placed 3rd at the state tournament.The next year, his Senior year, he pinned his way through every tournament, going undefeated and captured the 3A state Heavyweight title, which also helped the CHS team place 4th that year at the state tournament.

Colby High School Class of 1951
Gerald Smith was the first 4 time state placer for the Colby High School Wrestling team.
Placing 4th, 3rd and then placing 1st his Junior and Senior seasons individually, as well as being a member the 1951 Team State Champions.

Colby High School Class of 1952
Jack became the 2nd 4-time state placer for Colby Wrestling - 1 year after Gerald Smith. Jack placed 4th, 3rd, 2nd, and 1st during his 4 years at CHS.
During his Junior and Senior seasons, he only lost one wrestling match, which was in the final of his junior year.

Colby High School Class of 1973
Gordon is a CHS graduate, class of 1973. After 4 years at Dana College in Blair Nebraska, where is competed in Football, wrestling and track, he came back to Colby and started coaching for Colby Schools in 1977.
Gordon Coached Football from 1977 -2001 ranging from Assistant coach to Defensive Coordinator to Freshman Head Coach and 8th grade Head Coach. Over this time, Gordon coached over 3000 athletes.
He also helped run the summer weights program during this time. He helped make a lot of the weight racks and equipment due to lack of funds to purchase new equipment.
Gordon was the Head Wrestling coach at CHS from 1979 to 1987, during his time as head coach, Colby had 7 individual state Champions, 21 individual state placers and he coached Colby to a top 10 finish at the state tournament in 8 of his 9 years as head coach, including a 2nd place finish in 1983, a third place finish in 1985 and a 4th place finish in 1980.
Gordon coached track from 1978 to 2021, coaching both boys and girls. During his 43 years coaching track they had a combined 32 League Championships, 205 state placers, 20 state champions, 1 State Team Title and 3 3rd place team finishes. He had numerous athletes that went on and competed at the collegiate level, several that became all Americans and 2 that qualified for the Olympic Trials.
Congratulations Gordon and thank you for your years of countless hours dedication to Colby High Schools athletes for over 40 years.
The 1958 Wrestling Team had a perfect 10-0 dual record and won the Northwest Kansas League that year. They went on to win the regional tournament and, ultimately, the 1958 All-Classes State Championship.
That team was coached by 1st year coach, Kyle Mines and they had 8 individual wrestlers place in the top 4.
