Welcome to MA 274!
This is our main course website, where I'll post regular updates and all course materials except for the reading assignments. For reading assignments, be sure to check our Moodle website.
The overview:
This course teaches you how to reason.
You'll learn how to:
Build rock-solid arguments from the ground, and spot the flaws in someone else's reasoning.
Communicate complex ideas with clarity, precision, and style!
Pin down a concept with a precise definition,
Approach new and more abstract math concepts with more confidence.
Along the way, we'll dive into some of the most fundamental objects and concepts in modern mathematics: logic, sets, functions, graphs, metric spaces, equivalence relations, sequences, and cardinality. These aren't just for your future math classes—they also form the underlying language of the fields of computer science, economics, physics, and beyond. No matter what career you choose, this course will fundamentally sharpen the way you think.
