Faculty members determine the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools, both those provided by the College and third-party tools not licensed by the College, in their courses and communicate their expectations regarding the use of AI tools in course syllabi. Students should also talk with their faculty/instructors to understand course-specific expectations and policies regarding AI use and non-use. For both course and non-course-related work (e.g., personal learning, career preparation, creative projects, or extracurricular activities) student use of AI must adhere to Colby’s policies, including Acceptable Use Policy, and applicable laws. Whenever possible, Colby advises that students, as well as faculty and staff, use Colby-provided AI tools in place of third-party AI resources due to data security concerns.
AI Literacy Module for First-Year Students
Recognizing that artificial intelligence (AI) is a widely discussed and increasingly accessible technology that students are encountering in academic and professional lives, Colby has created a critical AI Literacy module for incoming students.
The primary goals of this online learning module are to help students understand that faculty establish course-specific expectations regarding AI, and that AI may be prohibited, limited, or permitted depending on the course. The resource also emphasizes critical reflection on AI, encouraging students to consider how AI may affect learning, skill development, ability to think independently, and broader issues around ethics of AI use and misuse.
The learning module is hosted on Colby’s online learning platform, Moodle, and is required for all incoming first-year students to complete by September 3rd, 2026.

[DavisAI] New Fall 2026 Course (AI297 - Artificial Intelligence Lab Course)
This coming Fall 2026, the Davis Institute for Artificial Intelligence will offer AI297 - Artificial Intelligence Lab Course.
This collaborative research laboratory invites students from all four academic divisions to engage in development that leads the AI transformation from a liberal arts perspective. Participants will gain hands-on experience with generative AI and large language models (LLMs) to tackle real-world pedagogical and research challenges. Students will investigate these challenges, develop a project, and produce a final presentation demonstrating both the potential and ethical responsibility of human-centered AI.
A select few slots are available, and the instructors David Watts (Director of the Davis Institute for Artificial Intelligence) and Vijayanta Jain (DavisAI Postdoctoral Associate) will directly admit students.
To be considered for the course, students must complete the application found HERE.
This application must be completed to be considered.
