How often have you sat down to do something and then been immediately distracted by doomscrolling on Instagram or Snapchat? No, just me?
Revising effectively is not just about having a plan and the right resources, but the right environment, too. This is not a one-size-fits-all solution either, as what makes you productive might be different for others. Here are some tips for creating an effective environment.
One of the biggest distractions for most people is also a tool that most of us cannot live without.... your phones! To minimise these distractions, utilise the screen time management app on your phone or download a specific app to use during your revision as follows:
Forest - grow a tree while you study, if you leave the app, your tree will die!
Study Bunny - earn coins during focus sessions to decorate your bunny and its environment.
Opal - an app to block other apps. This is great for focus, but it is a subscription service.
Alternatively, you could leave your phone in another room or hand it to your parents to avoid distractions!
The Pomodoro Technique can be used to maximise productivity. The "Pomodoro Technique" is a time management method where work is broken into focused 25-minute intervals, called "pomodoros," which is the Italian word for "tomato," because the technique's creator originally used a tomato-shaped kitchen timer to set these intervals; essentially, each "pomodoro" represents a 25-minute work session with short breaks in between.
Establish a designated study area: Find a quiet, organised space where you can study without interruptions.
Set study goals: Clearly define what you want to achieve during each study session to stay focused.
Manage distractions proactively: Schedule time for checking emails or social media, but avoid doing so during active study periods.
Minimise external noise: Use noise-cancelling headphones or earplugs if necessary.
Avoid multitasking: Focus on one task at a time to maximise your study efficiency.
Plan your study schedule: Create a structured study plan with specific times for each subject.
Prioritise sleep: Adequate sleep helps improve focus and concentration.
Practice mindfulness: Meditation or deep breathing exercises can help manage stress and distractions.
