Setting: Lu is known for presenting all her stories in a dystopian background, in which is typically facing some kind of war or fight. For example, in the book Skyhunter, Marie Lu presents a dystopian city after a outbreak happens from the ancient word, civilization splits as one side wants to take control and a long war takes place as they try to stop a dictatorship like nation from overtaking the rest.
Sentence Structure/ Word Choice: Lu presents her works with the use of short startling statements in the beginning of her chapters or books in order to draw in the audience and set up how the book will go. She also uses specific word choice to present the reader with vivid imagery as well as set the tone of the book. A good example of this is in the book Skyhunter Lu presents each chapter with a short startling statement to give the reader insight on what the chapter might hold.
Characters: Lu is known for presenting her books with strong female leads often with a tragic past. You can see this is in almost any book she has written, the tragic past often involves the death of parents and helps the reader get more of a background on why the character reacts the way they do. Lu is also known for presenting the female characters as more strong and more masculine based characteristics while presenting the male characters as more emotional and feminine based characteristics.
There is nothing left for us.
This is the first thing you learn when you become a solus. You learn that Neptunus used to be one of 5 nations that arose from the depths of the underground before the Cerberus Federation killed them all and those who escaped well…they’re one of us. Solus, it comes from the ancient word for only or alone… it pretty much describes our lives; prisoners of war and slaves fleeing from nation to nation trying to escape.
There were 5 nations that arose from the underground; Cerberus, Mons, Phanos, Neptunus, and Arcadia. We wonder why the ancients left these artifacts.. These names plastered around… these reminders. Reminders of what happened before the war, what happened before the world ended, like cryptic clues of what earth used to be like.
When people arose from the bunkers that kept us underground, their faces pale as ash from the lack of sun and hands covered in the cracks exposing the scarlet hidden underneath their tender flesh, they saw the need for change. Our ancestors hid the past, leaving only traces of what the world used to be… Trying to erase the bad. Now, our job is to revive it, because only then can our nations overcome the domination of the Cerberus nation…
I come from Neptunus, a nation of water and sea. Built on the foundations of white sands, miles of ocean, and watery jungles filled with the gnarliest of creatures. Neptunus was one of the greatest food and weapon nations of the 5, left with books from the ancients describing every creature and shell you could imagine. Neptunus led the fight against Cerberus, providing weapons made of shells and shark teeth sharper than you could ever imagine but, that was nothing compared to what the Cerberus nation held. Arising from the bunkers with animals best described as hell hounds… trained for attack and living off human flesh and weapons of mass destruction put together from parts left by the ancients.
Cerberus destroyed my nation, my family, and my friends and now… my goal is to destroy them. I’m Maydia and this is my story.
Where there is light, there is also a shadow. Light appears over the mountains, beams of light showering over us.
A cold gust of wind chimes the bells of dawn as I start to awake slowly making my way to our defense camp. I am at war front, seventy miles from the protective barrier of Arcadia. Surrounded by mountains higher than the clouds. The morning is more silent than usual as we continue our watch on the cliffs.
It has been two months since the Cerberus federation launched an attack against us. Barely keeping the outer gates of Arcadia protected, we agreed on a temporary cease-fire. Yet, it remains difficult to uphold when what they want is not something we can give them but instead our nation itself. So we remain upholding our positions, holding onto the edge of our seats, ready for an attack whenever be it....
SETTING:
Lu always presents her books in a dystopian background typically with a war or fight going on throughout it. So, I mimicked this by creating a dystopian setting in a world where war wreaks havoc as the fight to be the true nation is key.
SENTENCE STRUCTURE AND WORD CHOICE:
Lu often uses complex sentence structure in which she sets the mood at the beginning of her chapter or passage with a startling statement and specific word choice in which its makes the passage more mysterious. I used this to begin both part of my story, setting up stage for what not only the book is gonna be about but the chapters within. Lu also uses specifc word choice to help the reader see what she is talking about in a more fine tuned manor. I mimicked this through my story as well such as describing peoples hands in such a strong manor to not only provide imagery but also provide some mental background in the way Lu does.
CHARACTERS:
Lu often presents her characters with a tragic or background which helps build the character's strength. I mimmicked this in my Character of Maydia in order to represent Lu's typical character style which is strong female leads with a tragic background which makes them stronger as chracters and provides the reader with more understanding of why the character reacts the way they do.
