In the novel Flight Sherman Alexie employs anecdotes and juxtaposition in order to draw attention to Zit’s experience through the polar opposite lens of each life he encounters, ultimately illustrating that putting oneself in others shoes creates a change in one's perspective to feel empathy.
Alexie challenges the main character's outlook on people through the expression of anecdotes they experience. For instance, Zit encounters a much more defective lively encounter as a mute person at a young age Zit proceeds to feel for the less fortunate people and takes a closer look at how life can be whilst missing a piece he once always had. Because of Alexie's disability life that Zit encounters it looks towards a shift in how one can appreciate the little, less noticeable qualities one has in life. Consequently, the removal of this sense makes one reflect on what they have in life compared to others. Therefore, Alexie’s creation of the anecdotal life can evolve the perspective of how one can visualize life through a different person's shoes and establish empathy for them. Alexie continuously uses anecdotes in order to keep pushing that the new scenes of peoples’ lives filter realization. Now, another one of Zit’s more influential life experiences was living in the life of his own father and how he began to experience the struggles his own father had and makes Zit really realize his perspective must change. Because, Alexie gives Zit the experience of a much more impactful viewer there can be a true awareness of the perspective of oneself. Consequently, the connection is not very powerful due to Zit being left at birth, however, there still is a sway of point of view from there still being family. Not only does Alexie incorporate anecdotes to reinforce empathy for others there can be juxtaposition within the new lens that take place throughout the novel.

The main character has a life where he becomes a pilot and in a way lives a normal happier life compared to the others, then after this he draws to his fathers life. Because of the way these two lives are ordered through the novel there is a noticeable difference that can be sought out. Consequently, the vast difference in views creates a sense recognition to change a view due to the fact that there wasn’t this lens seen before. Therefore, Alexie’s use of juxtaposes these two lives in the novel can really push forth that bringing oneself to feel for others can really change one's perspective. Moreover, Alexie’s pursues the idea of juxtaposing the lives that the novel is put in to build up the message clearly. Continuing on, the implication of the life of an FBI agent and that of course having a little more of a luxurious life one would think does actually bring forth a large amount of risk for oneself, and there is a chance of stress being a lot higher. Because of this life being viewed as a much more comfortable life it is formatted to bring forth the cons of the occupation. Consequently, the amount of stress and weight that is put on one's shoulders in this position might be a lot harder than one can see on the outside. Therefore, Alexie employs juxtaposition to strengthen that others lives are hard to live, so one should see their side of things and feel empathy towards them.
