Sherman Alexie Sr. and Lillian Agnes Cox gave birth to a baby boy named Sherman Alexie Jr. on October 7, 1966. He was one of six total children that were born. They lived on a very rough reservation called Spokane Indian in Washington. His family grew up with very little money and most people within their community were in poverty. Not only did the family struggle severely financially. Alexie had some major health issues growing up. “He suffered from congenital hydrocephalus and underwent surgery when he was six months old. Though the procedure did not affect his ability to learn, he experienced harsh side effects, including seizures, in his childhood.”(Kuiper) This health issue caused him to not be as physically active so he became quite a normal reader. These concerns would not stop him from getting the proper education he strived for.
He went off the reservation and attended an all white school and achieved top of his class. Alexie received a scholarship offer to Gonzaga University and began to study pre medicine, but he didn’t feel right throughout the course. Later down the road he made the comeback to school at Washington University where he took up a “...poetry course he took there with helping him find his voice as a writer.”(Kuiper) After Alexie had finished college he would publish his first novel in 1995 called Reservation Blues and for a first novel it was a pretty decent success. Later down the road Alexie married Diane Tomhave in 1994. They would have two sons Joseph and David.
However, there came a huge issue for Sherman Alexie. Many women accused Alexie of sexual assault and pleaded that they felt unheard and mistreated by him. With Alexie having such a high reputation prior to these women coming out and talking about their case they looked up to him. Therefore, they felt shunned by his fame and felt that they couldn’t speak out on such topics. Yet, the victims would finally break on the matter and open up the information to the rest of the world. Jeanine Walker would soon uprise and preach her story to the world. The two (Walker and Alexie) met at a basketball game and Alexie was getting concerningly close to Walker. When she turned around he asked if he could kiss her and she responded with no, yet Alexie was still leaning very close to her and trying hard to get a kiss from her.
On the other hand, this didn’t stop Alexie from producing novels that were very big hits during these accusations and low points in Alexie’s life. Moreover, soon enough Alexie would come to public speaking to address these accusations by saying that they were true. He continued on to admit to harming others and apologized for the people he has hurt. “Alexie may not be a household name, but he is one of the country's best known Native American poets and writers, with a charismatic personality and a large following.”(Neary) His address would shock the world. The media started to say that this was an exact incident of abuse of power and reputation.
An author named Anne Urus spoke out on this incident and that "If you are an aspiring author," Ursu says, "and you go to a reading of someone who is famous and beloved and whose work you admire, and he suddenly takes an interest in you and your work, and he thinks you're special, and you start emailing, and he wants to mentor you — and then suddenly it turns out all he wanted to do is have sex with you.” (Neary) Then another story came up after Urus’s response came to prominence with Erika Wurth. Wurth aspired to Alexie very much and would do anything for him to become his student. Sadly, this took quite a turn for the worse. The two met at one of Alexie’s meetings in Colorado and he would then try and do things with her she was not comfortable with. He did eventually stop because he knew he would eventually violate the law.
All throughout Alexie’s career he has won a large amount of awards for his novels. He achieved awards like PEN/Malamud Award for Short Fiction and PEN/Hemingway Citation for Best First Fiction. Alexie became an icon for the young adult field. People took notice of his crude yet interesting humor and they loved it. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian was the most popular comedy that he has created. This novel would acquire awards like New York Times Best Seller, receiving critical acclaim for its humor and poignancy, and National Book Award for Young People's Literature. Not only did he write novels he took up some screen play like Smoke Signals screenplay and the Film won Sundance awards. Sherman Alexie’s work is very successful ranging from award winning novels to even writing filmwork. Due to his wide success and being of native descent this brought a huge rise of native people to become their writing career just like Alexie did.
