Early Life 

Alan Gratz's success as a writer started in his childhood and early life. He was born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee, on January 27, 1972. Gratz describes his childhood as carefree but humid, which sparked his creative skills and inspired his passion for writing at a young age. Even as a kid, he loved to read stories that would later have an impact on his style of writing. He wrote his first book, “Real Kids Don’t Eat Spinach” in just fifth grade, showing his love and dedication to writing. This demonstrates how deep his relationship is with reading and writing as Gratz was already using his voice and showing his creativity at such a young age. As Gratz grew up, he applied to many schools due to the fact that he wanted to see and experience more of the world.Yet, Gratz ended up attending the University of Tennessee, close to his home. This is where he specialized in creative writing and earned a Master Degree in English Education. It was during this time that Gratz met Jon Manchip White, a creative writing professor who became an important mentor in his life. Gratz had a close relationship with White, who helped him develop his ideas. Gratz explained that White helped him find his voice and is a major part of his story as an author. After he graduated from University of Tennessee, Gratz soon went on to become an eighth grade English teacher, which likely inspired the way he writes to connect to his youthful audience. This experience helped him understand young readers as his books often combine adventure with important historical lessons to keep them both entertained, and learning. The blend of entertainment and learning is what makes his books both popular and enjoyed by both students and teachers. The early life experiences that Alan Gratz endured is what shaped him into an inspiring author who created many stories that connect deeply with readers around the world. 

Later Life 

Furthermore, Alan Gratz has continued to live a creative and inspiring life as an adult. He now lives in Ashville, North Carolina with his wife, Wendi Gratz, and his daughter, Jo Gratz. Gratz still goes to schools all over the country to connect with young readers and share his experiences as an author. During the visits he talks about his books, explains his story, and encourages young readers to follow their own dreams. Gratz has visited 39 states in his quest to influence young readers, showing the love he still has for reading and writing along with connecting with the people who love his work. During his later lifetime, he wrote around 20 different novels including his best sellers, Refugee, Prisoner B-3087, Projekt 1065, Ground Zero, Allies, and Heroes. Each of his books reflects his talent to connect with readers through adventures while learning about history. Along with his novels, Gratz has also written more than 6,000 radio commercials and contributed to magazines, plays, and tv shows, including episodes of “City Confidential on A&E”. This demonstrates his passion for writing and his ability to try many different things from a wide variety. Other than his success as an author, Gratz enjoys simple hobbies such as eating pizza, watching baseball, and still reading and writing books. Alan Gratz’s later life shows that he never stopped growing as a writer and his work continues to inspire many different readers across the world.

He has written around 20 novels, each being adventures and educational. He is most popularly known for writing exciting books that teach readers about historical events, including many different viewpoints on WWII, The Civil War, and Cold War. Many have become bestsellers, and several of his books have spent years on The New York Times bestseller list. For example, Refugee spent more than five years on the list, showing how much readers enjoy and connect with his books and characters. To continue, Refugee has earned him many great awards and accomplishments. For instance, the book has earned him the East Tennessee Writers Hall of Fame Award, the Sydney Taylor Book Award for Young Adult Fiction, and the Malka Penn Award for Human Rights. In addition to his novels, Gratz has also written radio commercials, plays, magazine articles, and even tv scripts, showing off his wide range of writing skills. His creative skills have been recognized through awards such as the Creative Achievement Award. He also earned a masters degree in English Education from the University of Tennessee, which shows his dedication to learning and connecting with young readers. These accomplishments show his talents as a writer, and reflect the hard work he has put into reaching young audiences through his books.
