Plot/ Structure
Cormac McCarthy is well known for his use of settings, by making them feel desolate. He tries to make the reader feel a sense of the unknown by describing his settings as being so vast, McCarthy always gets praise for his sense of isolation
The way that McCarthy utilizes imagery is probably his strongest characteristic, he is a master at making a place feel lived in at one location while making another location feel like its been desolate and abandoned for decades, also he does an amazing job of showing how characters interact with their environment, his word choice makes his characters feel like real people which helps him
Another strong characteristic of McCarthy is his strong plot, every novel that he makes has an inherent way of pulling people in to read, whether its a wild west gone even more wrong then people thought, or a post apocalyptic earth that focuses on a father and son relationship and their struggle to survive
Author emulation Piece
The vast blue ocean expands endlessly while reflecting on the burnt crisp skin of the man whose lips show a lack of water that has stretched on for days, the man cannot escape the endless blue that envelops him whether it's the sky or the watery grave that awaits him,
Are you alright? The woman asks
never been better. Says the man
How can you joke when we have been stranded for days?
The woman was in a similar state as the man malnourished and in need of any sustenance her slick brown hair running past her shoulders. The man that she shares her prison with is unfamiliar to her and she had never met him before their dire situation that they now find themselves in. The heat billows and wafts through the air and on their bright yellow raft that is made entirely of rubber and latex. Both the man and woman are a deep maroon color with sweat covering all surfaces of the bobbing raft.
Do we have any idea where we are headed? The man said
Why do you think that I would know that? Says the woman
All I remember is that you were awake before me and seemed to be more settled in and comfortable says the man inquisitivly
Well all there is to see is the ocean so its best to try and make yourself comfortable
While the two talked and talked it started to turn dark and with it alarmingly cold, the raft was equipt with nothing of use to help against the cold, the most that the pair had was the pair of clothes on their backs and one life jacket that is attached to the life raft.
Here take it says the man
He hands the woman the bright yellow vest while it doesn’t absorb heat or produce it the life jacket is the only form of additional covering that either of them have.
Appreciate it says the woman
The man stays silent and rather focuses on the pain that dehabilitates him from moving; the lack of food over the past few days has led his body to eat itself and make the man paralyzed with pain.
Explanation
I tried to mimic McCarthy's rich and enveloping style that gives room to the reader to imagine what is happening, an interesting thing is that Cormac doesn’t use quotation marks when sharing dialogue, I feel like he does this to not take you out of the immersion and keep the story flowing, also he doesn’t use commas that often which is odd but it's just something that he always does. Another thing that was a part of the emulation is Cormacs use of southern dialect and shortening phrases, he did this in most of his books, but mostly in his novels that took place in the american south, also probably the part that fascinates me the most about his writing style is the way that he can use descriptive words and imagery to successfully describe something that isn’t really there.
