The typewriter that he had used all the way until 2009 he bought it for 50 dollars in 1964
Cormac went on Oprah after the academy success of No country for old men. this was his first television interview
Charles Joseph McCarthy Jr. was born on July 20th 1933 to parents Charles and Gladys McCarthy, they lived in Knoxville Tennessee and he and his 6 siblings” - Oates, Amanda were raised Irish catholic, his father was a lawyer, while McCarthy was in school he was an altar boy for the church. Charles later went to the University of Tennessee, and studied liberal arts, Charles left the University of Tennessee to join the air force in 1953 this time in the air force gave him plenty of time to think about what he wanted to do, by the time he left in 1957 and went back to college he had changed his major to English and wanted to become a writer Cormac went on to publish stories in the schools magazine which had gained notoriety and won him awards like the “Ingram-Merrill award” - Oates, Amanda . After he saw that his writings were received well he dropped out of college and pursued writing in Chicago, Charles changed his name to Cormac McCarthy in order to make his name feel notable, and also because that was a name that his family gave him, coming from an Irish background. Cormac also eventually married someone who he had gone to college with, Lee Holleman, they got married in 1961, had a kid in 1962 and got divorced that same year, because of his dedication to writing while bringing in little to no money.
After Cormac got divorced he started writing a ton, and wrote his first novel “The Orchard Keeper, for which he won the William Faulkner Award in 1965 Also in 1965, he won an American Academy of Arts and Letters travelling fellowship to Europe.”- Oates, Amanda Cormac's first published book had won 2 awards here in the US and in Europe showing how good of a writer he is, he then went on to write 2 more books called outer dark and then Child of god. “In 1974 he won a Guggenheim fellowship.” Oates, Amanda ( the Guggenheim Fellowship is a very prestigious grant that only 3,500 people are allowed to apply to) after that he published Suttree and “Two years later, he won a MacArthur Foundation Grant, also known as a “genius award,” upon which he moved out of the motel where he was living in Knoxville, and purchased a home in El Paso, Texas.” Oates, Amanda after he moved out to El paso, this is when he started to become famous and get recognized world wide, his next book that he wrote was blood meridian which is considered to be his best book for the “sheer brutality and bleak story writing while also having interesting characters.” - Ceaser, Ed. Blood meridian is when his career started to skyrocket and people wanted to see more, his next book would start a trilogy known as the border trilogy this was something new to Cormac considering he hasn't done a series up to this point and he only does a series that are in the same continuity one time after.
After blood meridian and his trilogy of books it was the 1990s and cormac had been working on a play called the stonemason which is a story of an african american family during the 70’s who come from a long line of stonemasons, and he had been writing it since the 70s and finally his work had been completed in 1994, and the first time it was performed was in 1995 and it was received pretty well, this went out of Cormac's usual setting of books and it still was successful. After seeing through that the stonemason be completed he once again made his focus on writing books, his next book was Cities of the plain, but after that cormac takes his time with the next 2, and the next 2 are probably his most critically acclaimed other than Blood Meridian. No country for Old Men. and the Road. Both novels are adapted into award winning movies No country for old men was directed by the Cohen Brothers who have made some of the greatest films ever, and no country for old men won them 4 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, Best supporting actor, and best adapted screenplay. While the road the novel took home the Pulitzer, the movies did win a few awards but not nearly as many as No Country for Old Men. After those 2 major successes the world was infatuated with cormac mcCarthy, he went on oprah and did an interview and many people were looking to talk to cormac, but one thing about Cormac McCarthy is that he didn’t really enjoy the spotlight he would've preferred to write and inform and leave himself out of it but he couldn’t escape it, his reclusive lifestyle was reflected in his “residence outside Santa Fe, New Mexico. It was a stately old adobe house, two stories high with beam-ends jutting out of the exterior walls, set back from a country road in a valley below the mountains” he amassed 20,000 books which just shows his love of literature. After the craziness that was the road and No country for old men, he took a bit of a break and his next book came out in 2022 16 years after The Road no one knows why he took that break but it's pretty easy to assume that he had enough of the spotlight and wanted to go back to living peacefully. The Passenger, and Stella Maris came out 2 months apart from each other, and they were books in a series, and Stella Maris was the last of the series and the last book that he would publish until he died in June of 2023 of natural causes. Cormac left behind a legacy of some of the most well received novels in recent history, some of his books have been adapted to other mediums for more people to enjoy his bleak worlds that he created even though Cormac McCarthy was a recluse and didn’t like the spotlight he still found “The act of writing was its own reward”- Caesar, Ed.
