Hear what some of our former AVID students have to say about our program!

I am currently a sophomore at Cal State University San Bernardino, and I was in AVID for 5 years. Going into AVID my 8th grade year and all throughout high school helped me both mentally and with life after high school. AVID was a gateway to many amazing friendships that turned into family. All of the tutorials and the organization helped prepare for the chaotic life in college. There’s not a day that goes by where I don’t miss the constant help that I had every step of the way whether it was homework, life problems, etc., AVID was/is a family I’ll forever be grateful for. I was lucky enough to have Ms. Plebani 2 years in a row, and she became a best friend I never knew I needed in life, and all thanks to her I achieved many things such as being chosen as the keynote speaker at our RIMS AVID ceremony in 2019. I was in front of so many people, but felt confident all because they believed in me. AVID takes a chance on those who were handed nothing, and shows them that you can do anything and everything you set your mind to.

AVID helped me because both of my parents didn’t attend college so I didn’t know how to go about the process. Being in AVID, I had the resources and workshops needed to apply to college, explore the options of schools, and options of majors. I’m a senior at Cal State Fullerton, majoring in Chemistry, and I am also a Pre-Nursing major which makes me a double major. I’ll be done with both of my majors by fall 2022!

As a first-generation student to go to college, AVID helped guide and prepare me for the application process and how to understand the documents I was signing. It gave me tools like study techniques and note-taking skills that helped me get the most out of my classes. I graduated early from the University of La Verne with my B.S. in Business Administration, and am currently pursuing my Master's degree.

AVID has helped me a ton. As someone who only went to 1 year of college and decided to take a different route, I now own a trailer manufacturing company out of Lake Havasu City, AZ!

I feel like the skills I learned in AVID help me analyze and pick up on important points when signing contracts with major dealers. Also taking the time to not only read through them just once and sign, but to reread and maybe even make a copy for myself and highlighting the key terms such as the dealer's monthly purchases, and annual purchases--as well as the pricing for that specific dealer that we come to agree on.

I am in my third year at the University of Oregon studying business administration concentrating in marketing, Minor in Spanish. AVID has helped me in my everyday life, especially when it comes to organization. It’s super important to stay organized in college so I don’t miss any important dates. AVID has also helped me with interpersonal skills by not being afraid to ask teachers for help and, knowing my strengths and weaknesses.

AVID definitely helped me guide through the seemingly difficult process of applying to college. As a first-generation student, I had no knowledge in regards to applications and financial aid applications. Not only did AVID help me with my college applications and financial aid, but the program also helped foster good habits. They taught me how to be organized by keeping a planner and also effective ways to study. AVID also creates a group of friends that YOU can always fall back on. To this day, I still keep in contact with my AVID peers.

--Steven Hernandez, UCR Biology Major

I am an English major at UCR and during my past 4 years in college, I have utilized all my organizational skills that I gained from my years in AVID! AVID definitely improved my note-taking process which made it a lot easier to reference my notes while studying for classes. Not only this, but AVID has taught me the importance of keeping an organized and consistent planner to stay on track with my busy college schedule and never miss important deadlines, such as assignments, exams, and meetings!
