More Steps You Can Take
Intern Blog Post - Samantha Schutt
If you’re graduating soon, you’re probably trying to figure out how best to plan your next step. Although you should apply broadly to different jobs and industries, there are still a lot of things to keep in mind and even research. As you search and apply for jobs for post-graduation, consider these factors:
Research Different Jobs And Roles
First, think about what kind of job you might want and research the qualifications for that job, such as the education and experience required, if the position is full-time, part-time, remote, or hybrid, and the salary you can expect. Make sure you also consider things that will impact your career satisfaction, such as your career goals, alignment with employer values, and more!
Determine Your Career Goals
Likely, the most important factors to consider are your short- and long-term career goals. As you apply for jobs, it can be helpful to identify your career goals and the types of work experiences you would like to have. You may be seeking a job that is a step toward achieving your career goals, even if it is not your dream job. For example, some organizations offer professional development and tuition reimbursement for ongoing education. Alternatively, you may be seeking a permanent job role that fulfills your career ambitions.
Consider Your Values and Personal Preferences
Your values and personal preferences for a workplace should play a large role in your job search. Explore organizations’ mission statements and values. You may find there is alignment or misalignment between your values and the organizational values and culture. You may even have the opportunity to interact with members of the staff during your interview. Use this interaction to explore how compatible you feel with potential colleagues and supervisors. Creating a positive work environment begins with a strong foundation.
Keep Your Family/Friends, Location, And Cost-Of-Living In Mind
Family considerations, geographic location, and cost-of-living are also factors to consider when searching and applying for jobs. You may find it helpful to consult members of your family as you explore jobs in different geographic locations. If you’re interested in moving for your career, be sure to investigate the cost-of-living to identify if your potential salary would be sustainable.
