Reading: We utilize a balanced literacy approach which includes:
Wonders: This includes comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, spelling, and writing skills
Daily Five and CAFE management systems
Reader's Theater (fluency work)
Depth and Complexity components
Responding in writing to various genres of text
Spelling/Vocabulary: Spelling/vocabulary is conducted weekly
Writing: Students are expected to write to prompts using correct grammar, punctuation, and conventions. Students will also write using various writing genres.
Math: The math curriculum used is MyMath from McGraw Hill. There is an online component (ALEKS) that students will be trained in as well.
Social Studies: Students will be using their first non-fiction textbook called, Communites, and will learn about places in the past and present time. They will also learn about various landforms and the Pikes Peak region.
Daily participation, being prepared, homework, projects, and quizzes make up the student’s grade.
Science: District 12 utilizes Science Kit curriculum. This curriculum aligns with the state standards and benchmarks for science.

* Performance Assessments and final exams are given at the end of each unit. Written responses will also be a requirement.
Technology Skills - Students learn the letters on the keyboard to allow for success in typing for future assignments. Students also learn about internet safety. Your child can practice their typing skills on typtastic.com.
Students will also be taking tests online in both Math and Reading to get them accustomed to the format of the Colorado State Assessment. They will also get more experience using the Google Classroom platform.
