About the Canon-McMillan High School Preschool Program
This is a free preschool program for 3, 4, and 5 year old children who live in the Canon-McMillan School District. We have preschool class for about 2 1/2 hours four days a week: Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. There is a morning and afternoon class. Morning class times are from 8:30 to 10:45 and afternoon times are from 11:40 to 1:50. We begin school at the end of September and run through May with a few breaks for holidays and change of school semesters.
Your child will see three classes of high school students. The high school junior and senior students enjoy working with and teaching the preschool children. Mrs. Krebs is with the children throughout the day and oversees the lessons that the high school students prepare. Each day will have circletime, an art project, a large motor activity, storytime, snack, and a small lesson. Parents are asked to provide snack once or twice a month. You may be asked for other supplies like tissues or hand sanitizer throughout the year.
Our program focuses on the importance of play as the primary way that young children learn. We work on skills like cutting, writing, phonetic awareness, counting, number recognition and other skills to help the children prepare for kindergarten. Safety is of course a priority and we always monitor the children's movements to make sure they are safe in our care. We have a bathroom in the classroom for the children to use. Mrs. Krebs will assist children if they need help. Your child will never be alone with one of the high school students.
We try to use the high school building as much as possible by playing in the outdoor courtyard, visiting the library and using the open atrium space for large movement activities. We also complete some projects with other high school teachers throughout the school year.
