Here is a list of fun learning favorites that you may enjoy utilizing at home. Each activity is age appropriate, motivating, and filled with excitement both personally and academically! What better way to share quality time with your child, or the entire family! Enjoy!
1. Word Scramble - Unlimited Players
Choose one of the sight words from the "Trick Word Wall" list. You can find a printout under the Trick Words slide. Using magnetic letters, foam bathtub letters, or even each letter written on a strip of paper. Have your child "unscramble" the word and put it back together like a puzzle. Repeat for the same word or as many words as he or she likes. As your child gets better at the spellings of each word, you may want to introduce a timer!
2. Sight Word Bingo - Unlimited Players
Create a Bingo board with nine (9) squares. Each player writes a different sight word in each box. The Caller chooses a word from a bag, bowl, box, etc. and each player covers the word if he or she has it on his or her board. For fun, you may choose to use M&M's, coins, tickets, checkers, etc. as replacements for game pieces. If you use a food item, it is edible at the end...and, cleanup is a cinch!
3. Number Action - Unlimited Players
Grab your chalk and practice writing numerals on the pavement, sidewalk, walkway, foundation, mini chalkboard...wherever chalk can go! For more fun, use colored chalk and exercise patterning, color recognition, fine motor skills...the opportunities are endless!
4. The Shape of Things - Unlimited Players
Go on a hunt for shapes in your environment! Whether you are driving, riding or on foot, on the way to the supermarket, going a wagon ride or taking a walk, you can find shapes in almost anything you see! Use your sense of sight and go on discovery; a heart shaped leaf, a circle in the traffic light, a rectangle shaped mailbox, etc. the "sightings" are never-ending!
5. I Spy - Unlimited Players
I Spy with my little eye...letters, shapes, colors, words, sizes... whatever you can think of! Use your imagination while your child's critical thinking skills flourish!
6. Number Crunch - Unlimited Players
Count objects while on an outing, in the backyard, or on an adventure...begin with number one and count on, then count back! See how far you get...100 or more!? If stuck indoors on an inclement weather day, group or line objects up in fives or tens! Make up addition and/or subtraction stories and include toys, pets, family members, or friends...then solve them! Who knew math could be this much fun!
