North Carolina State Board policy states that students enrolled in Math 1 may not change their schedules to drop this class after the twentieth (20) day of school.
Please be aware that the Math 1 curriculum is comprehensive and rigorous. Teachers are mandated by state and local guidelines to complete the entire course in a school year.
Math 1 builds on all the skills students have covered since the beginning of their formal study of math in kindergarten. If students are not secure in their understanding of operations with percent, fractions, decimals, and/or basic problem solving, they may have difficulty mastering the skills presented in Math 1.
If your student has expressed concern about the pace or expectations of this course, you may want to consider changing his/her math placement. This would give your child another year to develop the skills necessary for success in the next grade.
Students who take Math 1 in middle school will now receive high school math credit for this course, but their grade will not be a part of their high school GPA. These students will still be required to take 4 math credits in high school.
