Our magnet is an academic magnet. The Learning Immersion program is for students in grades K-2. It provides academic rigor with a focus on Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences. Students learn through projects and solve real-world problems. The Talent Development program is for students with TD certification in grades 3-5. This program provides full-time gifted instruction for these certified students. It offers an accelerated, rigorous approach to the Common Core standards. Students participate in a variety of projects and problem-based learning opportunities.
Students can only enter the magnet in grades K-2, unless they have TD certification. You must participate in one of the two lotteries that occur each school year. You apply to the lottery for the next school year. Once the lottery closes, Student Placement will notify you of your placement. All siblings must participate in the lottery in order to receive the younger sibling guarantee.
If you live in the violet and the West Mecklenburg High School feeder in the blue zone, you may be eligible for transportation, however, you must still apply for a stop on the CMS transportation web page.
Children with a creative, positive, enthusiastic, motivated, and risk taking personality would thrive in an LI/TD Magnet. Kindergarten through 2nd grade children will be exposed to different ways of thinking, problem and project based learning, and be involved in creative activities. Third through Fifth graders are certified AIG and they will be involved in electives and have cotaught classes with a certified Talent Development teacher.
