An articulation disorder involves problems making sounds. Sounds can be substituted, left off, changed or added.
- Substitutions: replacing one sound for another
- w for l - "weg" for "leg"
- d for g - "dod" for "dog"
- f for th - "toof" for "tooth"
- Omissions: leaving off a sound - this error really affects speech clarity
- "He wah wih duh efant" for "He walks with the elephant"
- "I see a boo lap" for "I see a blue lamp"
- Distortion: changing a sound
- Addition: adding a sound
- “guhlasses" for "glasses"
- "mapuh" for "map"
Not all sound substitutions and omissions are speech errors. Instead, they may be related to a feature of a dialect or accent. These are not speech sound disorders, but rather errors of the phonological features of other languages or dialects.
