We look forward to seeing you throughout the day during your assigned class times starting Aug 17, 2020
We started this journey to online learning March 16th and we have learned alot since then. Thank you to all of my students who have joined us on zoom every class. I hope that you have enjoyed our time together. The best thing about having online material, is it stays online, even after school is officially closed for summer. SO, you can continue on your artistic journey using these materials.
For our last sessions next week, let's do a "Best of Online" sharing. We will review our resources and maybe try to recreate some of our favorites, using a different medium or color scheme.
Thanks again for being my students and teaching me just as much as I teach you.
See you next year (or somewhere in Balantyne for my 5th Graders!)
Mr. Jason Sword

For all my students K-5, we will close out the year with artist studies. Each week we introduce a different artist who is currently working.
Our first artist is Kadir Nelson. Please review this Google Slide show and be ready to create a piece of artwork based on his work during our lessons this week. We will have a group discussion about the questions that are in the slide show. You may want to write down your answers before class so you can remember what you would like to share.
Based on the work in this slide show, you may do one of more of the following.
Copy part of one of the works you liked most from Kadir Nelson
Create a piece that is similar to one of these works, but that represents you or your family
Write a review of one of these works that explains how he uses shading, lighting and scale to make his work look heroic.

Thank you to all of the students who are sharing your Monday afternoons with us! We had over 100 "zoomers" yesterday!
To better serve our students we are changing our schedule to have each special offered everyday at 3:30. Each grade level will have an assigned time to help thin out the numbers of each class so we can see you and help you better.
Thank you to all of the students who have signed up for the Google Classroom too. As of this posting we are up to 54 students signed up. For those that have not signed up yet, here is our next sharing lesson for Next Weeks' sessions.
Friday 4/24 is Hat Day.
What kind of hat did you wear? Did you ever wish you could make your own hat? Well, here is your chance. Earth Day is April 22th and it has inspired me to use recycled materials to create your own head fashions!
For Monday April 27, 2020 please make a hat with materials you have at home.
Here are some materials you might use...
Paper Bag
Newpaper
Tin Foil
Construction Paper
Masking tape
Old clothes
Rope
Baskets
Milk Jug
Glue
I have added some online resources to help fuel your creativity. I found a range of hat ideas, from easy to a little tricky. See how far you can go! Challenge your family to join you. I look forward to seeing all of your hats on Monday, April 27.
Stay safe and create from home!

Did you make any art over the break? I found the time to create a t-shirt design for the Spectrum of the Arts summer program. The theme is "dream". I created all of the parts in my sketchbook using a pencil first and then I used a variety of pens to create the cross-hatched look. I then scanned the inked drawings into my computer and used Corel Draw to add the colors.
I also created a new lesson for sharing during our April 27 Zoom sharing time in google classroom. It is based on our Hat Day for Friday, April 24th.

If you have not joined yet, please make sure you use your student account to go to the classroom app in Google. Then add the class with the code t6h75pn.
I have been busy this week building my Google Classroom. It is full of links and lessons for all ages. To access it, log into your google drive and then go to the "Classroom" app within your google apps...where you would go to use Google Docs, Slides etc...
Once you are in Google Classroom, look for the big + at the top right and add my course using the code t6h75pn. Once you sign up, you will receive notifications every time I update the lessons or anything else about the site.
Thanks to Mrs. DeSantis for showing me this cool app...flipgrid!
Follow this link to my first FlipGrid. https://flipgrid.com/fd79f706
Students, all you need to do to make this work is follow the link, and login with your school email. I can't wait to see you!

March 24 - Art Activity
We have been home bound for about a week now.
What are the things you miss most about going to school?
Create a picture that shows this activity. Make sure you include as many details as you can. Where does this activity take place (setting)? Who is involved with the activity (character)? What happens (plot)? TELL THE WHOLE STORY! Include color and texture, think about light source and how that might affect the objects in the artwork.
Look at the image to the left...what do you think the story is here? What do you think the light source is? How can you tell that this is not a "modern classroom"?
Email a jpeg of your drawing and I can start to keep an online gallery of student work here on this site. jason.sword@cms.k12.nc.us
I have updated my Art Website with specific lessons for the time we are closed.
https://sites.google.com/cms.k12.nc.us/artpoloridge/art-prompts-for-home
I will updating these lessons each week.
**Fourth and Fifth Grade students, please take this opportunity to explore the Americanism Poster Contest Opportunity. It is great way to learn local history and use your art skills!
Art Tip of the Day
March 20 - Take a walk outside and look for inspiration. Look up at the clouds, what do you see? Look at the flowers, how is their color affected by the sunlight? Do you see any insects? Are there any other animal tracks? The world around you is full of inspiration, you just have to stop for a moment to take it all in.
Take a photo or make a drawing of the inspiration you find!
Email a jpeg of your drawing and I can start to keep an online gallery of student work here on this site. jason.sword@cms.k12.nc.us
I took this photo yesterday on a walk with my dog. Notice how the edges of the Tulips are lighter than the inside.
Art Tip of the Day
March 18 - Take a moment to think about the things you see everyday in your home. When we are busy, we tend to take these things for granted. Make a drawing of one or more of these things. Use expressive color that shows how grateful you are to have that thing.
Email a jpeg of your drawing and I can start to keep an online gallery of student work here on this site. jason.sword@cms.k12.nc.us
Check this out!
Italian artist Marcello Barenghi draws incredibly realistic everyday objects that appear almost three dimensional with the help of colored pencils and occasional enhancements using markers or watercolor. Each work appears ever so slightly stylized which I think sets these apart from similar hyperrealistic drawings that are meant to ‘trick’ a viewer. If you want to see more, Barenghi runs a YouTube channel where he documents the process of almost every drawing.
