After the American Revolution had successfully established a new government, the idea spread all over the world. It not only went to France, but also to many of the other colonies controlled by the Europeans.
While all joined together are called the “Latin American Revolutions”, they are actually a series of revolutions that all happened at roughly the same time. The revolutions are the Haitian Revolution, the Mexican Revolution and the South American revolutions.
Causes of the Latin American Revolutions:
The revolutionary fever of the late 18th century, influenced by Enlightenment ideals of liberty and equality, resulted in massive political upheaval across the world, starting with the American Revolution in 1776 and the French Revolution in 1789.
The Enlightenment ideas and the successful American and French Revolutions inspired by those ideas, encouraged similar revolutions in Latin America; first in Haiti (then the French colony of Saint Domingue), whose revolution began just two years after the start of the French Revolution.
At first, the white settler-colonists in Haiti were inspired by the French Revolution to gain independent control over their colonies, but soon the revolution became centered on a slave-led rebellion against slavery and colonization, a trend that would continue throughout the America with varying degrees of success.
Soon after the French Revolution the capture of Spain by Napoleon and France, wherein Napoleon replaced the Spanish king with Napoleon's brother, caused Spanish Creoles in Spanish America to question their allegiance to Spain. With a French King in charge of Spain, the Creoles had no connection to the King of Spain or the new government.This started independence movements throughout Latin America that culminated in the wars of independence for South America, which lasted almost two decades.
