Reading Resources
Why Children Should Read 20 Minutes a Day and How This Impacts Development-At Any Age: This article makes a strong case for 20 minutes of reading a day. There is a great homework debate in education and some research suggests homework may not impact student achievement as much as educators think. The exception to that? Reading nightly! As a mom and teacher, this is a non-negotiable with my kids every night.Â
Read Brightly- We love all the booklists on this website but their booklists for advanced readers are really good. It can be hard finding books that are at advanced reading levels without the content being too advanced. Check these lists out for some great options!
Math Resources
Math Olympiad Problem of the Week - These are geared towards grades 4-5, but younger students can try them. They are fun for the whole family and a solution page is included!
Instructabeats - This website is run by two CMS Teachers. They make songs and videos to explain math concepts. Click on Grade Level Content to find math videos based on your child's grade. Click on "Tough Stuff" for some fun math challenges. We love "Brain Coffee"!
Free Rice- While students practice their multiplication facts, they can "earn" rice donations. When the students answer questions correctly, rice is donated to countries in need. This site is not just for math. You can practice vocabulary, foreign language, and geography, but my favorite thing to use the site for in math facts. Many students struggle with fact fluency, (even advanced problem-solvers) and this a great, philanthropic way to practice!
Social- Emotional Resources
SENG- Supporting the Emotional Needs of the Gifted. This is a nonprofit with articles, resources and community of gifted adults and parents of gifted students.
Byrdseed- Ian Byrd is a gifted educator and has written about many topics related to the social-emotional needs of gifted students.
