Theodor Seuss Geisel Award

The Theodor Seuss Geisel Award is a literary award by the American Library Association that annually recognizes the "author and illustrator of the most distinguished book for beginning readers published in English in the United States during the preceding year. 

The award is named for Theodor Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss, who once said, "Children want the same things we want: to laugh, to be challenged, to be entertained and delighted."

Kindergarten Favorite Geisel Book

All kindergarteners read Fox the Tiger and Stop! Bot! in Creative Commons.  Then all kindergarteners voted on their favorite Theodor Seuss Geisel Book Award book.

The Caldecott Medal

The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.

1st Grade Favorite Caldecott Book

All first graders read Bear Came Along and We Are Water Protectors in Creative Commons.  Then all first graders voted on their favorite Caldecott Book Award book.

N.C. Children's Book Award

The North Carolina Children's Book Award program is a children's choice program designed to introduce children to current children's literature and to instill a love of reading. The award is sponsored by the North Carolina Library Association's Youth Services Section and supported by school and public librarians across the state. 2nd Grade Favorite NC Children's Picture Book

In Creative Commons, most second graders read all 12 picture book nominees.  Then all second graders voted on their favorite NC Children's Picture Book.  This award is the one award that is truly voted on and chosen my the children of NC.  We will see if our vote matches the NC Winner when it is announced!

4th Grade Favorite NC Children's Junior Book

In Creative Commons, all fourth graders read 30,000 Stiches, You in the Universe, and the first chapter of A Rover's Story.  All students voted on these 3 books for a fun vote.  However, If students read a minimum of 3 junior book nominees, then those students were able to vote on their favorite NC Children's Junior Book.  This award is the one award that is truly voted on and chosen my the children of NC.  We will see if our vote matches the NC Winner when it is announced!

Coretta Scott King Book Award

The Coretta Scott King Award is an annual award presented by the Coretta Scott King Book Award Round Table, part of the American Library Association (ALA). Named for Coretta Scott King, wife of Martin Luther King Jr., this award recognizes outstanding books for young adults and children by African Americans that reflect the African American experience. Awards are given both to authors and to illustrators.

3rd Grade Favorite Coretta scott King Book

All third graders read R-E-S-P-E-C-T, Undefeated, and What is Given From the Heart in Creative Commons.  Then all 3rd graders voted on their favorite Coretta Scott King Book Award book.

Pura Belpré Book Award

This award is named after Pura Belpré, the first Latina librarian at the New York Public Library. The Pura Belpré Award, established in 1996, is presented annually to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth.

5th Grade Favorite Pura belpré Book

All fifth graders read Planting Stories: The Life of Librarian and Storyteller Pura Belpre, Separate is Never Equal: : Sylvia Mendez and Her Family’s Fight for Desegregation, Where Wonder Grows, and Dancing Hands: How Teresa Carreño Played the Piano for President Lincoln in Creative Commons.  Then all fifth graders voted on their favorite Pura Belpré Book Award book.
