Ms. Sims is a native of Apex, NC and is grateful to lead the PHS choral program since she came on staff in 2022. She began studying piano at the age of four, but developed her love of choral singing in church choir in high school as well as in the Apex High School choral program under the direction of Heather Copley. Ms. Sims attended UNCG for both her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees, both in music education, and is a proud alumna of the UNCG Sapphires women’s a cappella group. She began teaching middle school chorus in 2008 at Northwest School of the Arts, then spent the next 10 years teaching chorus at Parkwood High School, both very active choral programs. Ms. Sims enjoys leading the excellent choral artistry at PHS and growing studentss singing and musicianship skills, as well as nurturing their social-emotional development.
Ms. Sims has been involved in choral ensembles in the Charlotte area since 2009, including VOX and Nova Voce, and she currently sings with both Caritas A Cappella Ensemble and Inspirar, which is based in Rock Hill. She was the Music Director at Morningstar Presbyterian Church in Matthews from 2013 until 2024. Recently, she accepted the position of Music Director at Providence Presbyterian. Ms. Sims has served on the state board of NCMEA for the North Carolina High School Choral Section since 2019, and currently serves as Chair Elect for high school choir.
She is married to Winston Sims, a fellow high school performing arts teacher, and they have two children, Veda Grace (9) and Elliott (5). In her spare time, Ms. Sims enjoys reading - especially books by Brené Brown, Louise Penny and the Harry Potter series (she’s a Ravenclaw!) - and also enjoysyoga, cooking, and growing flowers.
