Tech Tools to Assist in Differentiation

Google Classroom is a simple way to assign differentiated tasks and assignments. You can select which students complete each task which also allows groups to be flexible.

NewsELA has current event articles at multiple reading levels. Easily differentiate a text for the different Lexile levels of the readers in your classroom.

Education Galaxy is a mixture of mini lessons and assessment practice for both math and reading. Lessons can be assigned to an entire class or individual students. Reports allow students to see student progress and use for differentiation.

Khan Academy includes instructional videos and student practice for both reading and math. However, the math resources are especially wonderful for student reteach. Teachers have access to see student success and progress.


Sora is library access to check out ebooks and audiobooks. It allows students to choose books that they are interested in as well as at an appropriate reading level. Great resource for independent reading.

EdPuzzle allows you to take videos, both original to EdPuzzle and from YouTube, and add questions to help gauge student understanding. There is a library of already created lessons, but you can also make your own.

Commonlit gives access to a variety of texts and genres. Annotation tools, questions, and discussions are all available for student support and assessment. Student reports allow teachers to track progress and differentiate for differing levels of success.

Quill includes differentiated writing and grammar instructional activities. Students can complete a diagnostic assessment to determine what grammar skills they should work on. Student reports show teachers the proficiency as well as the growth.

Tools for Differentiation of Student Work Product

Flipgrid allows you to create a specific assignments and have your students respond on video. You can set it to allow for other students to watch and comment. A great way to encourage authentic and constructive feedback.

Padlet can be used in a variety of ways. You could use it to have students work collaboratively or as a response system. Students can comment on or "like" each others posts. You could have students respond to brainstorming as a whole group. This is a very versatile tool.

Google Slides are often used by teachers, but your students can create some wonderful products using this and other Google tools. Slides are particularly great for student work product as it allows for a lot of creativity as well as ease of organization of information.

Book Creator is a great way to have students publish their writing. They can also read work by other students. The CMS ELL department has some specific resources to use book creator in their literacy lessons (in District Resources listed below).

Critical Thinking and Differentiation Strategies

Project Zero has so many different Thinking Routines that it would be impossible to summarize the resources here. The entire focus of their Thinking Routines Toolbox is to help teachers teach children how to think. It includes ideas, organizers, and explanations for a plethora of routines.

The PL Toolbox is a great resource for those who are trying to make personalized learning, playlists, and/or pathways work in their classroom. It includes a clear breakdown about the different progressions in independence you can use to structure your classroom.

Edutopia is a mixture of educational research and ideas for implementation. The specific link above takes you to their articles focused on Differentiated Instruction, but they have a wealth of resources to share.

GoOpenNC's advance learning hub includes links to lesson to encourage growth in your highest performing students. GoOpenNC also includes "hubs" for ELL students, specific subjects such as STEM or school library media, and the NC teacher toolbox.
