Technology Updates!

Device distribution for August 7 and 8 has been canceled. Each participant will receive a device on August 13 or 14; however, you will not have access to your device or email until August 16.

We have received the following information from the CMS Office of Technology:

New teachers will receive access to their CMS account credentials after their official start date, August 16, 2024.
We encourage you to bring and use your personal device for Crown Academy.
You will have access to the CMS guest wireless network.
If you do not have a personal device, an IPad will be available for check-out.

As we continue to receive information, it will be shared with you.

You will not need a laptop/tablet on July 29, 2024, but please consider bringing a device with you July 30-August 1. If you do not have your own device, a CMS iPad will be available for check out each day. But these devices MUST be returned each day.

barcode entry ticket

You will be receiving your Check In Barcode during the week of July 22nd. It will be coming from the email address noreply@cms.k12.nc.us. You are welcome to print the barcode, or save it to your phone. You will need this ticket to check-in each morning at Crown Academy. It includes important district information. Barcodes could take up to 24 hours to be generated once your hiring is completed.

Whova App

This year, Crown Academy will be hosted on the Whova App. Through this app, you’re able to network with other teachers before the conference, see the agenda, and sign up for choice sessions. The exciting part? We’ll be having a major contest, where the winner will receive the ULTIMATE Teacher Starter Kit, provided by Beginning Teacher Development and Support!

This week you will receive an email from Whova to join the event and to download the App. Once you download the app, it will take you to the homescreen. On the homescreen, you’ll have access to the Agenda, contests we’re having, and be able to see all attendees. There is also a cool Community Feature where you can interact with each other prior to the conference. The more you interact with the app, the more points you gain, the better the chance to win the ULTIMATE prize pack.

Create your profile! Let everyone know which school you’ll be working at! You may meet your new colleagues 🙂
In the Agenda, you’ll need to choose your choice sessions for August 12. The choice sessions are broken into two areas. You will need to choose your session based on the two pathways below:
- Elementary (Prek-5); Student Support (in Blue)
- Secondary (6-12); Electives; World Languages (in Purple)

Please don't decorate your laptop

Heads up! Adding stickers or decorations directly to your laptop isn't allowed. If you'd like to personalize your device, a laptop case is a great way to go! Thanks!

Multi Factor Authentication

Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools uses an MFA (Multi Factor Authentication) process on all of their computers. MFA helps protect your CMS account and the CMS network from security breaches/compromised passwords. It reduces the success of phishing attacks and compromised accounts.

Multi-Factor authentication is a process by which a user logs in with two pieces of information: something they know, such as their password, and something that they have, such as their physical device. When you log into your email account, you will be asked for a 6 digit code that is accessed through an authentication app such as Microsoft Authenticator, sent via text message, or via a phone call.

All CMS Staff must configure MFA for their CMS account prior to accessing email and any 365 products. Detailed instructions regarding the Multi Factor Authentication process can be found HERE. Please make sure that you go through the MFA process prior to arriving at Phillip O'Berry High School to pick up your Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools device. We can guide you through the process during your device pickup if needed.

CMS Technology Password Keeper

To access the CMS Technology Password Keeper, sign on to your CMS Google account then click the lock to the left. You will be asked to make a copy of the CMS Technology Password Keeper. Once you make the copy, it becomes your personal document in your Google Drive. No one else will not have access to your personal information.

Red Rover

Red Rover is a new cloud-based system for Time, Absence, and Teacher Substitute Management.

Time: All employees will use Red Rover for checking in and/or entering and tracking time. This system will replace Kronos, Synovia, and SmartFind.
Absence: Employees will also use Red Rover instead of paper request for absence forms to enter leave requests.
Substitute Teachers: Schools and instructional substitutes will use Red Rover instead of SmartFind to manage substitute teaching assignments.
Loging In: Employees will use their same ID # to clock in, and use their regular CMS email/password to login to request absences.
