Goldfish Multiplication: Students created multiplication equations by placing groups of goldfish crackers into goldfish bowls on recording sheet.
Distributive Doctor: Students pretended to be surgeons while "breaking apart" arrays. They began to "see" the distributive property of multiplication and why 3 x 6 is equal to (3 x 2) + (3 x 4) or equal to 3 x (2 + 4).
Pratt's Pizzeria: Students pretended to be chefs while using pizzas to investigate fractions of a whole. They began to understand that fractions must be equal parts, fractions can name different parts (fourths, halves, eighths). They also explored comparing fractions and equivalent fractions by realizing that when pizzas are cut into more slices the slices are smaller.
