The first intro meeting for Science Olympiad is this
Thurs Oct 5 from after school till 5pm in room 702.
6th, 7th, & 8th graders with a GPA of at least 2.5 with an interest in events involving:
Building- battery vehicles, rubber band planes, hovercraft, bottle rockets, roller coasters, duct tape challenge, towers, & Raspberry pi coding
Research & labs- rocks & minerals, disease, anatomy, tectonics, amphibians & reptiles, meteorology, solar system, optics, potions & poisons, maps, thermodynamics, & crime busters.

Warning...Lots of things did not go as planning this weekend!
1. Tried to copy info from Thurs Oct 6 meeting into wiki. Won't let me copy, paste, take a photo & upload like it has in the past.
Last meeting: So you missed a few challenges: color, birthday( 2 nice "out of the box" responders), airplane distance & target, paper folding a sci olympiad topic ( still need to decide winners).
Tues Oct 11 Builders 3:30-5 pm for wright stuff, bottle rockets, hover craft, & mission possible to go over rules. Bring supplies.See below also.
Earliest to turn in your teacher evaluation ( have to turn in signed scavenger sheet to get it)
is Tues Oct 11 am before announcements or pm builders. Then you get stickies & pick up to 3 event rules which you can keep trading back in & move your own stickies!
2, Herrick & Ms. P went to Raleigh for workshop. It shut down at 2 instead of at 5pm because they were using the school for an emergency shelter. I missed scrambler (we know stuff about this one & The event leader for NC is a former student of mine so I can ask lots of questions later) & hovercraft (sad but I saw the event leader & go to see stuff & get some clarifications).
3. Loss of power & we got wet. P drove through rain & wind that afternoon. I opted to stay with my son in Raleigh( land of no power, fallen trees & some flooding). Car got hit with a small branch, had to back up a hill so as not to drive through a foot of water. Challenge for a treat for those bothering to read this: How many inches of water can sweep a car off the road? Must write it down with your name & turn it in as you arrive on Thurs. He lost power & still didn't get it back.
4. Workshop suggestions:
Wright Stuff get airplane kit at AC Moore 2 planes for ~$6 to build practice & modify I went to Matthews store & they couldn't find them. Try on-line or different store.
I think we can also build the balsa tissue planes.

Wind power- Got to cut old vinyl/ plastic window blinds to make blades. Worked really well. Find some old or damaged ones to bring in. Even ask Home Depot orLowe's for damaged blinds or scraps when they cut them down.

1. sign in NB being passed around
2. Turn in info/scavenger to Herrick to get teacher evaluation( which once completed can be turned in to Herrick at the earliest on Tues am before HR announcements to get your rule/stickies.
3. Sit by groups of favorite color then put your name on index card with your guess of how many perfect scores there will be on the scavenger hunt. First one to raise their hand & be called on to get Ms P(once she arrives) to giggle/laugh & then tell us about the science flower bulbs sale will win a treat. You must complete this task in order. No spilling the beans ahead of time.
4. Emily S. - See me about getting your eval sheet at fencing if you remind me to bring one. Anu(He who wants to go to State this year) & Zachchchkkkk- see about what you want to do.

It is mainly for new parents but veteran parents are allowed !!!
Curriculum night is after from 6:30-8:30 pm.

Our region will have the trial event Amazing Mechatronics!!!!!
It involves demonstrating knowledge & understanding of mechatronics by debugging & fixing applications on a Raspberry Pi (I don't have one yet...) & Scratch (only heard of it) to program certain tasks.
