Many students are surprised to learn that colleges often charge a fee for applying. Colleges do this to offset the cost of processing  applications, which takes a lot of time. Some college applications are free -- community college applications, for example. Other college applications cost anywhere from $25 - $100 each. The good news is that Garinger High School students are automatically eligible for fee waivers to apply to colleges that charge fees. You can also take advantage of College Application Week or Countdown to College, when many North Carolina colleges and universities do not charge application fees.
