We are excited to welcome students back to campus for the new school year! We have some exciting opportunities for Global Studies students already, with more to come soon. Please see the September Newsletter for more information. Because our introductory course, World Humanities, will not be offered until Spring, we will have some special Global Studies events this fall to allow students to get to know each other. If you have any ideas for events/activities, please contact Ms. Williams (emily.williams@cms.k12.nc.us or come by Room 413).
Rising Freshmen should register for WORLD HUMANITIES
Rising Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors who would like to participate in the Global Studies Program and have not taken World Humanities may also register for that class
Students who have taken World Humanities should register for AP SEMINAR
Students who have taken both World Humanities and AP Seminar should register for either AP RESEARCH or AP HUMAN GEOGRAPHY
Contact Ms. Williams if you have questions (emily.williams@cms.k12.nc.us)
All of us in the Big I Global Studies Program are excited to welcome students and families to the new school year. Of course, our school situation is continuing to deal with Covid 19 and will certainly require all of us to be flexible and open to new experiences.
The challenges faced by the worldwide pandemic serve as a reminder that we are part of a global community. In his final public statement, Congressman John Lewis reminded us that "each generation must do its part to help build what we called the Beloved Community, a nation and world society at peace with itself." The concept of the Beloved Community was popularized by Dr. Martin Luther King, who envisioned a world not free of conflict, but one that resolved conflict through nonviolent means. In the Beloved Community, international standards of decency do not tolerate hunger, poverty, homelessness, racism, and any form of discrimination. This is the underlying mission of the Global Studies Program at Independence: to help students develop a global perspective that enables them to approach conflict and develop solutions to problems through a lens of social and economic justice. The Global Studies Program at IHS will use the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as a basis for exploring world issues. You can find the SDGs here.
