Independence is proud to offer the Legal Diversity Pipeline Program, sponsored by Street Law, Inc. Through this program. students learn about corporate law by working with attorneys from the Honeywell Corporation and Alston & Bird, LLC. The attorneys visit the school twice to teach about different aspects of law, then students travel to the Honeywell corporate headquarters for a day of legal simulations. Independence is the only school in North Carolina to offer this program!
The Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte and the Stan Greenspon Center for Peace and Social Justice have launched the Student to Student Peer Education Program, a youth-led program that seeks to fight against antisemitism and prejudice in high school students. On May 23, a high school student and a Queens University student visted with students from the 2024-25 Independence Student Council and DREAM Team to share their experiences as Jewish Americans and ways to dismantle antisemitism.
On November 4th, author Amber Smith visted our CIE General Paper classes to talk about her work as a writer.
We were thrilled to hear from guest speaker Dominique Burelson, member of the Lumbee Tribe and owner of Paperbacks and Frybread independent bookstore. We also sampled native dishes prepared by Chef Mallow of the Lumbee Tribe.
