National TestING Accommodations
HOW TO APPLY FOR ACCOMMODATIONS FOR NATIONAL EXAMS
To receive accommodations on a National ACT or College Board Exam (PSAT, SAT, AP), the student must have approval granted by the appropriate testing organization. Having an IEP or 504 Plan does not automatically qualify a student for accommodations on any of these national exams.
The steps for requesting accommodations for each exam are listed below. Be aware that it can take up to 7 weeks to receive a decision about accommodations, and there is a deadline for requesting them. All accommodations for College Board and ACT Exams are considered parent initiated in which the parent/guardian of the student must complete the documentation provided below and return to our school testing coordinator: robert.carrington@cms.k12.nc.us to begin the process. Please read each organization's website thoroughly before starting the process.
Follow these easy steps and links to apply for accommodations for National Exams
PSAT, SAT, and AP Exams
Complete the COLLEGE BOARD CONSENT FORM
Email the Consent Form along with any supporting documentation you can provide to robert.carrington@cms.k12.nc.us. Please indicate if your student has an IEP, 504, ML Plan, or Transitory Impairment Plan.
The School Testing Coordinator will submit your request for accommodation to the College Board.
Once approved, you will receive confirmation from College Board
Once College Board approves an accommodation, your student may use that accommodation for all College board assessments. College Board does not require you to register for a specific exam before requesting approval for accommodations. However, there are deadlines published for each exam. Please visit the College Board/AP website for more information or to register for any College Board exam.
PreACT and PreACT WorkKeys
The school will follow the accommodations outlined in the Student’s School Accommodation Plan. Please know that the PreACT is meant to prepare students for the ACT. The ACT does not necessarily approve all accommodation requests.
THE ACT
You must apply for accommodations for EACH ACT exam for which you register. This includes ACT tests that occur during the school day.
The ACT Organization requires that the student register for a National ACT exam first and then submit the request for accommodations.
You will register for your ACT EXAM HERE. During the registration process, you will be asked about accommodations. Complete that section.
The School Testing Coordinator will receive an email indicating your accommodation request.
You must complete the ACT CONSENT FORM and the ACT PREFERENCE FORM.
Return the two forms along with supporting documentation such as the student’s medical and/or psychoeducational diagnoses to robert.carrington@cms.k12.nc.us
The School Testing Coordinator with update your request with supporting documentation and a copy of the student’s school accommodation plan.
Once approved, you will be notified by email from ACT.
ACT accommodations may be listed on your student's IEP or 504 Plan, but ACT must approve the use of those accommodations before we can implement them on the test.
If ACT approves your student’s accommodations, we will provide their accommodations, and their scores will be college-reportable.
If ACT does not approve your student’s accommodations, we will still provide their accommodations, but their scores will be non-college reportable.
You may sign the waiver below stating that if ACT does not approve your student's accommodations, we can test them in a standard-setting room without their accommodations.
ACT accommodations requests require medical documentation related to a student’s medical and/or psychoeducational diagnoses. Please provide these documents when returning this form so we can complete the accommodation request promptly. For information on what documents could be required, please see the ACT website.
If your student took the state-required ACT with accommodations as a junior, you must still request those accommodations again for any National ACT. A separate Parent Consent Form MUST BE SUBMITTED to begin the accommodations request process for the ACT. The deadline to apply for accommodations for the ACT given during the school day in Spring Semester is early January.
You will be notified of your student’s accommodations status once it has been approved or denied. If you are unaware of the status of your student’s College Board or ACT accommodations or if you have further questions, please email Robert Carrington, our school testing coordinator: robert.carrington@cms.k12.nc.us
