GVSA Student Services Department Quick Reference for Staff



CPS Reporting Law/Procedure: Call Mecklenburg County’s reporting hotline at 980-31-HELPS (43577) if you suspect child abuse or neglect ASAP. Notify the school resource officer, grade level counselor, and grade level administrator that you made the report.

Suicidal Ideation Protocol:

  • During school hours: Staff should notify a mandated assessor (counselor, school psychologist, school social worker, school nurse) immediately by calling on the white phone or calling the main office and having them walkie the assessor. The student should not be left alone!
  • IF you cannot locate a mandated assessor, call your grade-level admin for assistance. You may also call Mobile Crisis to come to the school and assess the student in English or Spanish at 704-566-3410.
  • After hours, weekends, holidays, or evenings: Contact the Principal and CMS police to share the concern and request a wellness check at 980-343-6030. If an attempt is in progress, call 911.


Social Worker Request Procedure: For support with attendance/truancy interventions, reach out to Ms. Gates. The McKinney-Vento Program: If a child/family is experiencing a housing crisis or you suspect that they may be homeless, please reach out to Ms.Miller.

School-Based Mental Health Referral Procedure: Teachers or parents may request school-based mental health services through Cano Counseling Services by referring the student to the grade-level counselor. If students are approved for services, they will occur weekly during school hours.

Section 504 Child Find Procedure: Teachers and other staff are obligated to notify the appropriate grade level counselor if they:

~Suspect or receive information regarding a student’s disability that may warrant additional support.

~Receive a parent request for accommodations based off of a child’s current diagnosis.
