Daily Lessons

Each week a brief summary of our daily activities in ELA class will be provided here. If you are absent: (1) check the assignment calendar on the home page of this website; (2) look on Guay Google Classroom for each day's notes, activities, and assignments; and (3) if the assignment is in paper, check the "While You Were Out" box in the classroom.

March 16th Onward...

Well who would have thought we would be using distance learning for all this time. Please go to your Honors ELA class in Canvas. From Canvas there will be a link to Guay Google Classroom. All activities are posted there on Friday afternoon and are due the following Friday afternoon. I miss you all and hope to see you soon.

Week of March 9 to March 13

Vocabuary this week: Module 3 List C vocabulary quiz on Friday, March 13th.

This week we will complete our book talks on our novel, Two Roads. Students will analyze characters and points of view from Two Roads and submit note-catchers for each. We will than learn about the basic components of an argument and create posters with claims, reasons, evidence, and explanations. Our posters will focus on the argument whether or not Cal Blackbird should return to Challagi Indian Industrial School.

Week of March 2 to March 6

Reading this week: Monday, chapters 27 and 28; and, Tuesday, chapters 29 and 30. Gist record for chapters 23 through 30 is due by Thursday, March 5th.

We will continue our reading of our novel, Two Roads, with book talks focused on chapters 23 through the end of the book on Thursday and Friday. We will concentrate on plot, character development, point of view, and theme in our book talks this week. Note that Wednesday is an Early Release Day for CMS schools.

Week of February 24 to February 28

Reading this week: Monday, chapters 19 and 20; Tuesday, chapters 21 and 22; Wednesday, chapters 23 and 24; Thursday, chapters 25 and 26. Gist record for chapters 16 through 22 is due by Wednesday, February 26th.

Vocabuary this week: Quiz on Monday, February 17th on Module 3 List A vocabulary words. Quiz on Friday, February 21st on Figurative Language and Poetry Terms. We will spend time in class reviewing these words.

We will continue our reading of our novel, Two Roads, with book talks focused on chapters 10 through 15. We will concentrate on plot, character development, point of view, and theme in our book talks this week. We will learn about poetry terms so we are better able to analyze upcoming poetry. We will learn about the difference between intensive and reflexive pronouns.

Week of February 10 to February 14

Reading this week: Monday, chapter 7; Tuesday, chapters 8 and 9; Wednesday, chapters 10 and 11. Thursday, chapter 12. Gist record for chapters 1-9 is due by Wednesday, February 12th.

IXL this week: IXL Contract #11 is due on Tuesday, February 11th.

Vocabuary this week: Quiz on Monday, February 10th on literary terms. Quiz on Monday, February 17th on Module 3 List A vocabulary.

We will be reading and discussing a number of documents pertaining to Native American boarding schools this week including: the Meriam Report, "The Cutting of My Hair," "Iron Routine" and our novel, Two Roads. Our focus is on point of view and perspective.

On Friday, we will take our Module 3 Unit 1 Mid-Unit Assessment.

Week of February 3 to February 7

We will begin Module 3 on Native American boarding schools this week. Our novel for this module is Two Roads by Joseph Bruchac. Students are asked to read chapters 1-9 of Two Roads between now and February 12th. Gist records for chapters 1-9 are due on Wednesday, February 12th. Students should also be prepared to discuss chapters 1-9 in small groups on February 12th.

This week we will (1) infer the topic, (2) analzye a speech about Native American boarding schools, (3) and analyze primary documents from a student at one of the schools.

  • NoRedInk.com "Subject-Verb Agreement" is due Monday, February 3, 2020. Quiz that same day.
  • IXL Contract #10 is due Tuesday, February 4, 2020.
  • Vocabulary quiz on literary terms is Friday, February 7th. Update: Quiz moved until Monday, February 10th due to no school on Friday.

Week of January 27 to January 31

This week will be dedicated to writing our collaborative problem-solution essay on the innovator we have been researching.

  • IXL Contract #9 is due Tuesday, January 28, 2020.
  • Problem-Solution Essay due NLT Friday, January 31, 2020.
  • NoRedInk.com assignment titled "Subject-Verb Agreement" is due Monday, February 3, 2020. You will also have a quiz on that material that day.
  • IXL Contract #10 is due Tuesday, February 4, 2020.

We will begin Module 3 on Native American boarding schools on Monday, February 3, 2020. Our novel for this module is Two Roads by Joseph Bruchac. If you have chosen to purchase a copy of this book, please bring it to class on February 3rd and every day thereafter.

Week of January 20 to January 24

Unusual schedule for this week:

  • Monday -- Holiday; no school.
  • Tuesday -- IXL Contract #8 is due today. We will concentrate on determining if a source has bias or not. We will also practice parphrasing. Finally, we will have our quiz on NoRedInk focused on our "More with Nouns" assignment that is due today.
  • Wednesday -- We will take our Unit 2 End-of-Unit Assessment. This is an informal grade worth 100 points. Your Research Note-Catche is due today. Any extra credit ("10 in 10") is also due today.
  • Thursday -- We will begin our work on writing our problem-solution essay by first reviewing a model essay as well as the criteria for an effective essay. Remember that your problem-solution essay is due no later than Friday, January 31, 2020.

Week of January 13 to January 17

  • This week we will contiue our research project on design solutions. We will perform research, and find credible sources for our chosen innovator. Deliverables include:
    • Research Note-Catcher due NLT Wednesday, January 22, 2020.
    • Problem-Solution Essay due NLT Friday, January 31, 2020.

Week of January 6 to January 10

Activities for the week include;

  • This week we will begin our research project on design solutions. We will learn how to perform research, and how to find credible sources. Students will be assigned their research partner and the innovator they are researching. Deliverables include:
    • Research Note-Catcher due NLT Wednesday, January 22, 2020.
    • Problem-Solution Essay due NLT Friday, January 31, 2020.
  • Tuesday: We will receive our IXL Contract #7. Contracts are now (and going forward) customized to your skill set. IXL Contract #7 is due Tuesday, January 14, 2020.
  • Wednesday -- Early Release Day: Students will get their accounts on NoRedInk.com and learn about their first assignment titled "Parts of Speech #1 (nouns and verbs)." This assignment is due on Monday, January 13, 2020. Students will also have a nouns and verbs quiz on next Monday.

Week of December 16 to December 20

Activities for the week include;

  • Reading this week: Read chapter 13 to end of book of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind and update your Gist Record. Be prepared for comprehension check questions on Friday. Completed Gist Record for the entire book is due NLT Friday.
  • This week we will continue to analyze our book with a focus on text structures, effective summary writing, figurative language, author's methods, and central idea.
  • Monday: Comprehension Check Questions on chapters 10, 11, and 12.
  • Tuesday: Mid-Unit 2 Assessment on "The Hippo Roller" informational text.
  • Thursday: IXL Contract #6 (Catch-Up Contract) is due.
  • Friday: Comprehension Check Questions on chapters 13 to end of book.

Week of December 9 to December 13

Activities for the week include;

  • Reading this week: Read chapter 10, 11, and 12 of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind and update your Gist Record. Be prepared for comprehension check questions on Monday.
  • Vocabulary: Module 2 List C vocabulary quiz on Thursday.
  • This week we will continue to analyze our book with a focus on text structures, effective summary writing, figurative language, author's methods, and central idea. We will also take part in a Socratic Seminar which asks the question: How did William use the design thinking process?
  • IXL Contract #6 (Catch-Up Contract) is due by December 19.

Week of December 2 to December 6

Activities for the week include;

  • Reading this week: Read chapter 6, 7, 8, and 9 of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind and update your Gist Record. Be prepared for comprehension check questions on Monday.
  • Vocabulary: Module 2 List B vocabulary quiz on Wednesday.
  • This week we will be analyzing our book with a focus on text structures, effective summary writing, figurative language, author's methods, and central idea.
  • Next Monday: Module 2 Unit 1 End-Of-Unit Assessment. Please study your text structures, author's methods, and figurative language summary sheets.
  • IXL Contract #6 (Catch-Up Contract) is due by December 19.

Week of November 25 to November 26

Short week this week with the following activities:

  • Comprehension check on your reading of chapters 3, 4, and 5 of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind.
  • Practice with characterization and identifying character traits.
  • Close reading of an informational text about William Kamkwamba.

Week of November 18 to November 22

Activities for the week include;

  • Reading this week: Read chapter 3, 4, and 5 of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind and update your Gist Record. Be prepared for comprehension check questions on Monday.
  • Vocabulary: Module 2 List A vocabulary quiz on Thursday.
  • This week we will be analyzing chapter 1 and 2 of our book with a focus on author's methods, central idea, inferencing, and key vocabulary.
  • Friday: Module 2 Unit 1 Mid-Unit Assessment. Please study.

Week of November 11 to November 15

Activities for the week include;

  • No school on Monday due to the holiday. However, Interim Assessments are this week.
  • Tuesday: We begin our second module, Critical Problems and Design Solutions. Students will be reading the memoir The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer. Students were provided a schedule for reading and a Gist Record template. By Friday, students should read pages 1-44 (prologue, chapter 1 and chapter 2) and update their Gist Record.
  • Wednesday: We will write about "design thinking" and perform a close reading of "The X-Factors of Success."
  • Thursday: Students will create posters for their X-factor and present to the class. Note that IXL Contract #4 is due today.
  • Friday: ELA Interim Assessment during classtime.

Week of November 4 to November 8

Activities for the week include;

  • No school on Tuesday due to Teacher Workday.
  • Monday: Compare and contrast the movie version of The Lightning Thief to the novel.
  • Wednesday: Present our independent research projects on Greek gods/goddesses to our classmates.
  • Wednesday: IXL contract #3 is due.
  • Thursday: Vocabulary quiz on Module 1 List H.
  • Thursday: Wrap up our work with The Lightning Thief and turn in our novels.
  • Friday: Module 1 Unit 3 Assessment and work on our IXL contract #4 which is due next Thursday, November 14, 2019.

Week of October 28 to November 1

Activities for the week include;

  • No school on Monday due to Teacher Workday.
  • Read and analyze chapters 20, 21 and 22 of The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.
  • Write Gist Records for chapters 20, 21 and 22 of The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.
  • Complete your compare and contrast essay comparing chapter 16 of The Lightning Thief with the associated scene in the movie.
  • Complete your independent research project on the Greek god/goddess you selected. You will present your research/poster to your classmates next Wednesday, November 5, 2019.
  • Thursday: Vocabulary quiz on Module 1 List G.

Week of October 21 to October 25

Activities for the week include;

  • Read and analyze chapters 17, 18 and 19 of The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.
  • Write Gist Records for chapters 17, 18 and 19 of The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.
  • This week will be spent comparing and contrasting specific scenes from the movie "Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief" and chapters 11 and 16 of our novel The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.
  • A majority of our week will be spend writing our own compare and contrast essay using the Painted Essay template.
  • Tuesday: IXL Contract #2 - Honors is due Tuesday of this week.
  • Thursday: Vocabulary quiz on Module 1 List F.
  • Friday: Grades close for first quarter. Next Monday, October 28th, is a Teacher Workday and there is no school for students.

Week of October 14 to October 18

Activities for the week include;

  • Read and analyze chapters 15 and 16 of The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.
  • Write Gist Records for chapters 15 and 16 of The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.
  • Analyze theme in our novel.
  • Analyze unfamiliar vocabulary from our novel.
  • Write summaries of the chapters we have read.
  • Read the myths "Cronus," Medusa," and "Prometheus" and compare/contrast it to The Lightning Thief.
  • Wednesday: Early release day. All classes are focused on Leader-In-Me curriculum.
  • Thursday: Vocabulary quiz on Module 1 List E.

Week of October 7 to October 11

Activities for the week include;

  • Read and analyze chapters 13 and 14 of The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.
  • Write Gist Records for chapters 13 and 14 of The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.
  • Analyze theme in our novel.
  • Analyze unfamiliar vocabulary from our novel.
  • Write summaries of the chapters we have read.
  • Read the myth "Theseus and the Minotaur" and compare/contrast it to The Lightning Thief.
  • Monday: Module 1 Unit 1 End-of-Unit Assessment.
  • Friday: Vocabulary Test on Module 1 Lists A through D.

Week of September 30 to October 4

Activities for the week include;

  • Read and analyze chapters 10, 11 and 12 of The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.
  • Write Gist Records for chapters 10, 11, and 12 of The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.
  • Analyze theme in our novel.
  • Analyze unfamiliar vocabulary from our novel.
  • Continue to write and discuss Percy's point of view and how it is evolving in the novel.
  • Turn in our IXL Special Assignment on Tuesday and then get our new IXL Contract #2.
  • Study vocabulary for our quiz on Module 1 List D on Thursday.
  • Practice Socratic Seminar techniques for our test next week.

Week of September 23 to September 27

Activities for the week include;

  • Read and analyze chapters 8 and 9 of The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.
  • Write Gist Records for chapter 8 and 9 of The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.
  • Analyze figurative language in our novel.
  • Analyze unfamiliar vocabulary from our novel.
  • Continue to write and discuss Percy's point of view and how it is evolving in the novel.
  • Turn in our IXL Contract #1 on Tuesday and then get our new IXL "special assignment."
  • Study vocabulary for our quiz on Module 1 List C on Thursday.
  • Take our Module 1 Unit 1 mid-unit assessment on Friday.

Week of September 16 to September 20

This week we will get our EL/LearnZillion workbooks and our copies of The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. All activities are available on Guay Google Classroom or in our EL/LearnZillion workbooks.

Our focus this week will be on activities where we:

  • Read and analyze chapters 5 through 7 of The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.
  • Write Gist Records for chapter 5 through 7 of The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.
  • Use context clue and word part strategies to figure out the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary.
  • Read and find the central idea of an informational text titled "Why Ancient Greek Mythology is Still Relevant Today." We will then make connections between our novel and this text.
  • Create a one-pager on the characters and settings we have encountered in The Lightning Thief.
  • Work on our IXL Contract #1 for Honors ELA. Due date is Tuesday, September 24th.
  • Study vocabulary for our test on Module 1 Lists A and B on Thursday.

Week of September 9 to September 13

Everyone should be up and running with Guay Google Classroom where you will find most, if not all, assignments. This week we will focus on:

  • Vocabulary: Module 1 List B. Quiz on Friday. Our focus is on using stems to determine the meaning of words.
  • Read and analyze chapters 1 through 4 of The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.
  • Writing Gist Records for chapter 1 through 4 of The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.
  • Analyzing point of view and how it changes over time for our protagonist, Percy Jackson.
  • Using context clue strategies to figure out the meaning of difficult words.
  • Reading and analyzing an informational text titled "Why Ancient Greek Mythology is Still Relevant Today."
  • Working on our IXL Contract #1 for Honors ELA. Due date is Tuesday, September 24th.

Week of September 3 to September 6

Everyone should be up and running with Guay Google Classroom where you will find most, if not all, assignments. This week we will focus on:

  • Completing our IXL Language Arts Diagnostic to determine a baseline reading level;
  • Practicing our vocabulary (Module 1 List A) in preparation for Friday's quiz;
  • Reviewing a variety of Google Apps (Google Docs, Sheets, Forms, Gmail, sharing, etc.) to improve our skills in Bailey's one-to-one environment; and
  • Begin our investigation into Greek Mythology which we will begin in earnest next week.

Week of August 26 to August 30

This week we will get acquainted with one another, learn about our ELA class, explore our critical-thinking skills, and attend a "tech bootcamp." On Friday we will begin our work with reading comprehension and vocabulary. This work will be repeated daily/weekly.
