Limit distractions. Teens are not mature enough to choose what they should do over what they want to do. The Chromebook blocks many online distractions. Have your student do school on the Chromebook rather than another computer or phone. Limit phone access to non-school hours.

How can Parents support their students emotionally?
Structure and Reliable Routines
Get up at the same time every day. Breakfast at the same time.
Provide as best as possible a designated work space.
Insist that students attend all classes.
Help the kids find ways to connect safely with friends.
Expect a bumpy ride and offer quiet and steady compassion rather than advice. Listen instead of fix. Normalize the stressfulness of the situation.
Remember that teens experience emotions more intensely than adults.
Plenty of sleep and physical activity.

What emotional supports are available for students?
Student services staff (school counselors, social workers and psychologists) are available to students during this time. Counseling is available for students via web or phone. We encourage students and families to reach out to their school's staff members.
If students or parents are experiencing a mental health crisis, please contact the mobile crisis team at 704-566-3410 (option 1). This free service is available 24-7 to all community members, and we have a team who specifically serves CMS students.
How do I talk to my child about Covid-19?
We understand the fear and anxiety that news and developments related to COVID-19 can cause in children. Click here to read tips from the National Association of School Psychologists on talking to children about COVID-19.
