Read with them (shared reading) - Select a higher level book to read with them aloud each night and model strong reading skills
Read the newspaper - usually written at about a 7th grade level or higher (depending on the newspaper). This is an excellent way to filter what they’re reading and build their vocabulary
Engage in real-life math - Stock market, small businesses, chores/allowances, etc.
Do not do their work for them! It is one thing to help, but allow them to make mistakes and share and express their own ideas (this is difficult when they struggle - we know!)
Have them write as much as possible!
Hold them accountable for their actions and grades.
